The Noble County Genealogical Society proudly presents actual
obituaries from the county dating from the late 1800’s through the year
2000. These books will contain the
scanned images of the newspaper in which the actual obituary appeared. The index at the end of each volume contains
every name mentioned in these obituaries.
The Noble County
library started this obituary file in the 1980’s. The state of Indiana sent all the old Albion newspapers, which
had been microfilmed, to the library. So the file was first started with only copies of the New Albion Era and
the Noble County American. Leona Haney
started clipping the obits and gluing them to cards so that they could be
preserved for future generations. Soon
it was decided to also start clipping obits from the Kendallville News Sun. We
are gratefully to all the persons who have over the last twenty years kept the
file current thus creating a valuable research tool for all genealogists.
In order to help the researcher we have tried whenever
possible to add the date of publication, the death date, the name of the
newspaper, and if a tombstone exists in one of the Noble County Cemeteries. We
have tried to at least give you a starting point. The dates following the obits
have the following codes:
N-The date of the
newspaper publication
C-The death date was
written on the obit card
P-A perpetual
calendar was used to determine the death date
F-A funeral card was
used to determine the death date
T-A tombstone exists
in a Noble County cemetery.
We are grateful to the members of the society, which in the
1980’s surveyed and recorded the tombstones in all the Noble County
cemeteries. We have used their books to
match the obits with the tombstones. We are aware that with any human endeavor
there may be errors. Please notify the
society of any errors and we will correct them. This book is meant to be a
research tool for genealogist everywhere but may not be copied, transcribed, or
abstracted in its entirety without written permission of the Noble County
Genealogical Society.
