Noble County Historical Society

The Noble County Historical Society was organized in April, 1965 when Lloyd Bender and several other interested citizens got together. One hundred members were soon enrolled. For a list of past officers click here.

An extensive Historical Marker project, under the guidance of Thurlo Holcomb, was undertaken at once.

On November 15, 1965, the first marker was erected to the memory of the first white settler in Noble County, Joel Bristol, who settled near Merriam (non-existent then) April 4, 1827.

The project was very popular and the final count revealed 66 markers erected at historical sites in the county. The project was financed by contributions.

The society meets at 2:00 P.M. on designated Sundays.

After ninety-three years of use, the old jail building was discarded for a new and modern one. In March of 1968 Sheriff Roy Sayles Jr., with his family and prisoners moved into their new home at the east edge of Albion.

The old jail property, consisting of two lots containing the jail and a double garage, was auctioned April 1, 1968. Our society purchased it for $2,275.00, obtained through contributions by individuals and organizations. It was purchased to be used as a museum and we at once named it The Noble County Historical Society's' 'Old Jail" Museum. An attractive sign is at the site.

Artifacts began arriving at an early date.  At the present time we have an unbelievable number of  antiques, books, pictures, uniforms, dresses, bedding, furniture, dishes, dolls, and various other items of by-gone days. Every item in the museum has been donated or loaned.  Additional items are welcomed and appreciated.

More than 1000 persons visit the museum annually. Our most prominent visitors have been; Dr. Earl L. Butz, Congressman Ed Roush, Dr. Harold Urey and Cliff Milnor.

The most widely known prisoners are well remembered by our readers.

A publication, "Pioneer Echoes", supervised by Sarah Knopp, is issued four times each year and mailed to the members of our society.

An annual membership is $10.00, student membership is $1.50 and a lifetime membership is $100. Membership includes subscription to quarterly "Pioneer Echoes," which contains many articles on Noble County history.
