General Notes:
John was baptized at St. Martin's Church in Louisville, Kentucky in April, 1866. Godparents were John Adam & Theresia Sebastian. While growing up, John moved several times between Louisville and Fulda, Indiana. Since German was spoken in the Fulda School, and English in Louisville, John said he had to learn to speak English three times.
After getting married in 1888, John and Anna moved on a borrowed springboard wagon and a horse to near Rome, Kentucky. They were sharecroppers for several years. John was also a shoemaker, and had all the tools of the trade. John then bought some wooded land, and cleared it with ax and saw. He used a team of oxen and a heavy logging chain to pull the stumps from the ground to clear the land for farming.
John sold this land to buy a farm near Fischer & Keller Roads near Rome. He prospered on the farm, progressing from a team of mules to a one cylinder tractor ca 1920. They bought a car and vacationed in St. Augustine, Florida, with son Albert about 1922.
