Mrs. Martha Doss




Mrs Martha Doss, 62, of 2719 Hillcrest Avenue one of the organizers of the Girl Scout movement here, died at 6:10 p.m. Friday (2 Jan 1953) at Deaconess hospital She was the wife of John Doss, a candidate for city clerk in the 1951 primary.


She became interested in Girl Scout work soon after it made its appearance in the country in 1912.


About 1930, she organized a troop here and was the first chairman of the Girl Scout council.


Mrs Doss was also active in P.T.A. work. She was president of the Reitz high school P.T.A. in 1938 and 1939 and was also past president of the City Council of P.T.A. association.


She was the 1952 president of the War Dad's auxilary and local promotion secretary for the Women's Society for Christian service. During 1950 she served as district promotion secretary for the WSCS.


Mrs. Doss was also one of the organizers of the Forest Hills Home Economics club and of the Reitz High school Home Economics club.


She was a member of the local order of Eastern Star and Central Methodist church.


She was the daughter of the late August and Elizabeth Kratz Elmendorf. Her father was the brother of William Elmendorf, one-time mayor of Evansville.


Surviving are her husband, John; two daughters, Mrs. Naomi Schmitt, of Evansville and Mrs. Juanita Johnson of Chattanooga, and son Wayne, of Springfield
