Schuyler Colfax Tombstone Restoration Project

In September of 2007, newly-elected Schuyler Colfax Chapter Vice Regent, Carol Nichols, wondered about the man for whom the chapter is named. She found his tombstone in the South Bend City Cemetery.

The tombstone was in need of a new top piece and the base needed repair. It was evident that restoration of the tombstone was essential. Monetary donations should be made to S.C.M.R.F./Schuyler Colfax Chapter and mailed to Carol S. Nichols, 30164 County Road, Elkhart, IN 46517-9767. Her contact information:

With the approval of the executive board of the Schuyler Colfax Chapter, NSDAR, work on Phase I began in earnest. Interest in the project grew and donations have been received. Carol investigated the possibility of applying for grant money, and wrote to governmental officials telling them of the chapter's intent, asking if they would like to participate. Efforts are underay to get the cemetery listed on the National Registry.

Travis Childs of the Center for History conducts tours at City Cemetery several times a year. Please contact him for dates by calling 574-235-9714.
