Karns/Kerns/Kernes Hougland Collings was born 5 Apr 1834 Scott Co., IN son of John C. Collings and Jane Broady. Hedied 14 Apr 1899 in Logan, OK. He married Sarah C. Clark on 16 Mar 1854 in Clark Co., IN. He enrolled in Co. K of the 66th Regiment of the Indiana Infantry on 28 July 1862 and discharged in Washington, DC on 3 June 1865. Kerns was captured by confederate troops under General Kirby Smith. He was paroled after signing a document with his mark that said he would not take up arms against the confederate states again under penalty of death. He filed for an invalid pension from Havensville, Pottawatomi Co., KS in August 1890.
