About our society:
The Southern Indiana Genealogical Society was formed May 3, 1979, to encourage, gather and preserve genealogy materials and information in the seven southern Indiana counties of Clark, Crawford, Floyd, Harrison, Scott, Perry, and Washington.
Our general meetings are held the first Thursday of each month at the New Albany-Floyd County Public Library in New Albany, Indiana. The time is 6:30 p.m. for a short business meeting. At 7:00 p.m., a qualified speaker presents a program of a genealogical or historical nature. A hospitality time follows the meeting.
Our collection of genealogical materials is housed in the Indiana History room of the New Albany-Floyd County Public Library. We are a non-profit organization, operated by volunteers. A listing of "for hire" researchers is available upon request from the New Albany-Floyd County Public Library, 180 W. Spring Street, New Albany, IN.
Our membership year is July 1 through June 30 and is $15.00 per year; a quarterly publication is published in January, April, July and October. Membership entitles a member to submit three free queries, of fifty words or less, to the editor for publication in the quarterly. A fee of $2.00 is charged to non-members for submitted queries. Membership also entitles the member to a discount on publications sold by the society.
All holdings of the Southern Indiana Genealogy Society are housed in the Indiana History Room of the New Albany-Floyd County Public Library in New Albany, Floyd County, Indiana.
The Southern Indiana Genealogical Society in New Albany, Indiana has
recently completed purchasing the entire 2,670-roll microfilm collection of the
Revolutionary War Soldiers Pension Applications and Bounty Land Warrants with
the assistance of a $20,000.00 grant from Caesars Foundation of Floyd County.
Researchers can now view all select and non-select Revolutionary War letters and papers held by the National Archives in Washington, D.C., as well as make copies of these documents. Viewing is possible at the Indiana Room of the New Albany-Floyd County Public Library at 180 West Spring Street in New Albany. If you are planning to be in the area, you can visit one of only four holdings of the complete collection. If you are unable to get to the New Albany-Floyd County Public library, lookups and copies can be had by writing SIGS Volunteers, P.O. Box 665, New Albany, IN. 47151-0665 or sigs@nafcpl.lib.in.us. There is no charge to use the collection yourself . SIGS charges $15 per lookup for non-members ($10 for each for those paying the membership fee of $15 per year) plus copy charges of $.25 per page. SIGS volunteers will make your copies of the files for those who pay the lookup fee. If you are in the library, the library staff will make the copies for you. All material desired thru the lookup request will be sent less than 30 days upon receipt.
As far as we can find out, there are only four other complete sets of Revolutionary War microfilms with the non-select material included. The National Headquarters of the Sons of the American Revolution is located nearby in Louisville, Kentucky.
