The Southern Indiana Genealogical Society was formed May 3, 1979 to encourage, gather and preserve genealogy materials and information in the seven southern Indiana counties of Clark, Crawford, Floyd, Harrison, Perry, Scott, and Washington.
Our collection of genealogical materials is housed in the Indiana History Room of the New Albany-Floyd County Public Library. We are a non-profit organization, operated by volunteers. A listing of researchers is available upon request from the New Albany-Floyd County Public Library, 180 W. Spring Street, New Albany, IN, however you are responsible for contacting the researchers and arranging payment to them, if they decide to do research for you.
Our membership year is July 1 through June 30 and is $15.00 per year; a Bi-Annual publication is published in January/April and July/October. Membership entitles a member to submit three free queries of fifty words or less to the editor for publication. A fee of $2.00 is charged to non-members for submitted queries. Membership also entitles the member to a discount on publications sold by the society.
The Southern Indiana Genealogical Society in New Albany, Indiana has completed purchasing the entire 2,670-roll microfilm collection of the Revolutionary War Soldiers Pension Applications and Bounty Land Warrants, with the assistance of a $20,000.00 grant from Caesars Foundation of Floyd County. There are only five completed sets in existance.
Researchers can now view all select and non-select Revolutionary War letters and papers held by the National Archives in Washington, D.C., as well as make copies of these documents in the Indiana Room of the New Albany-Floyd County Public Library, if you are planning to be in the area.
There is no charge to use our holdings, and copy charges are only $ .10 per page. If you are in the library, you can make the copies, or the library staff will make the copies for you.
Our general meetings are held the first Thursday of each month at the New Albany-Floyd County Public Library in New Albany, Indiana. Membership meetings begin at 7:00 p.m. After a short business meeting, a qualified speaker presents a program of a genealogical or historical nature.
The National Headquarters of the Sons of the American Revolution is located in nearby Louisville, Kentucky.
