SBFD First Fire Truck 1912

This picture marked the beginning of the end for one of the most thrilling sites man or boy ever witnessed, the dashing fire horses. Here you see South Bends first fire truck as it was placed in service at the Central fire station on March 25, 1912. No streamlining or balloon tires included in the equipment of the chemical wagon. Irving Sibrel, then a captain at the department and later chief is at the wheel with Chief Wilfred Grant who died here only a few day ago ( March 16, 1934) beside him, The men at the rear of the truck are Perry Alford(left) now a captain and Harry Hinkle. Standing on the side of the truck are Louis Lederer and Matt Schuler of Kenosha Wis., representative of the firm which manufactured the truck,   South Bend Tribune ... March 18, 1934

SBFD Central Fire Station 1919

Notes from rwoodhull@sbcglobal.net : I really appreciate seeing the Central Station photos. I grew up living at 315 S. Carroll St. Just around the corner from the station. When I was 6 or 7 years old I could go to the movies by myself but I was not allowed to cross St. Joe. St. by myself. I would go get one of the firemen to help me cross the street. At that time they had a large fish pond in their side yard and I spent many days watching the large goldfish swimming in the pond.

I had many memories growing up in that area. I got to know all the firemen. You might like to know that in the late 1930's they still had the horse tack from the 1920's hanging in the back wall of the station.
