A History of Holy Cross Parish

SOUTH BEND. St. Joseph County.
Holy Cross Parish Church.
1928

South Bends youngest Roman Catholic Parish will, this week hold a Bazaar at the Jefferson Plaza in an effort to erase outstanding debts against the church.

This Parish is Holy Cross located in the Northwest section of the city and serving more than 300 families. The first meeting for discussion of the establishment of the parish took place, September 17, 1928, when 200 people met in Muessel School.

The Righr Rev. John Francis Noll Bishop of Fort Wayne, had asked that the new parish be organized when the congregation at St Patricks had become too large.

Following this meeting the Very Rev. James A. Burns C.S.C., provincial of the Holy Cross Order at Notre Dame appointed the Rev. John F. De Groote C.S.C. as the new pastor of the parish. Father DeGroote had notable success in building up and promoting new parishes.

The first survey of the territory showed that 74 families were in the parish, but the final survey before building of the church showed 276 families or about 1000 communicants.

Funds for the new parish were suscribed by trustees of St. Patrick’s church. Callix I. Miller architech, drew up the plans patterning the church after Italian Romanesque style.

With everything well underway ground was broken March 25, 1929for the new edifice. Two months later on May 5, the corner stone was laid. Monsignor John Osadnik officiated at this event. In the corner stone is a relic of the true cross upon which the Crucifixion took place which was brought to this country by Father Sorin.

The relic was given by Father Sorin to Mrs. Heneritta Byely and in turn she gave it to Clement Studebaker. Later on he turned it over to Mrs. Patrick O’Brien and she gave it to Father De Groote.

Father DeGroote  served the church until July of 1934 when he was assigned to Notre Dame and replaced by Rev. Phillip Beaghen C.S.C. of Sacred Heart Parish of New Orleans La.
