Sister M. Samuela, CSC, (Cecilia Dyer Mudd), 88, was born in Waldorf, Md., on April 6, 1914, to the late Samuel and Claudine Burch Mudd. She was one of nine children. She is survived by her sisters, Carmelite Summers of Mitchellville, Md., and Christine Clements of Waldorf, Md.; a sister-in-law, Emily Rogerson; and by many nieces and nephews in Maryland. Sister M. Samuela was a granddaughter of Dr. Samuel A. Mudd, the doctor who treated John Wilkes Booth after he assassinated President Abraham Lincoln.
Sister entered the Congregation of the Sisters of the Holy Cross in 1933, made first profession in 1935 and final profession in 1938. Sister began her elementary teaching career at St. Mary's Academy in Marshall, Texas, Sacred Heart Academy, Lancaster, Pa., and St. Paul's School, New York. She received her BA degree in math and philosophy from Dunbarton College, Washington, D.C. She was a teacher in junior high at St. Patrick's School, Baltimore, and St. Hugh's School, Greenbelt, both in Maryland; Sacred Heart Academy, Lancaster; Holy Trinity, Norfolk, Va.; Blessed Sacrament, Alexandria, Va.; St. Paul the Apostle, Richardson, Texas; Assumption School, Washington, D.C.; and St. Anthony of Padua, Lancaster.
Sister was a tutor in mathematics at St. Bernard's, Riverdale, Md., until her retirement to Saint Mary's. She was at Basil Moreau Convent, South Bend, Ind., until early January when she was moved to Saint Mary's Convent, Notre Dame, IN. Sister was active in the Ministry of Prayer until her death. Reception of the body: Today, March 7, 2:30 p.m., Church of Our Lady of Loretto, Saint Mary's, Notre Dame. Funeral Service: Saturday, March 8, 10:30 a.m., Church of Our Lady of Loretto, Saint Mary's, Notre Dame. The Kaniewski Funeral Home is handling arrangements.
