MEMBER SPOTLIGHT

Adina Watkins Dyer



Adina was born and raised in Tippecanoe County, a daughter of Joseph Watkins and Betty Davis.  She graduated from Battle Ground High School, and in 1970 was married to Grant Dyer. They have a grown son, Aaron, daughter, Allison, and six grandchildren.  Adina began researching her family in 1987, and has been a member of TIPCOA for several years.  She is the coordinator for the Tippecanoe County INGenWeb and Caroline County MDGenWeb Projects, the Tippecanoe County Biographies Project, and the INGenWeb Links project.  She has been the TIPCOA newsletter editor since 2001, and maintains the TIPCOA Web site.  Adina has several ancestors from Tippecanoe County - some are listed below (* indicate direct ancestor).  You can contact her at asdyer@comcast.net or 2553 Kopf Lane, West Lafayette, IN 47906.  Visit her homepage, Tippecanoe Roots, at: http://home.comcast.net/~asdyer/


 Edmund CLARK was born 20 Jan 1813 in Connecticut.  He was married to Margaret CAMPBELL, dau. of James Campbell and Isabella Leach, 16 July 1843 in Tippecanoe Co., and they lived near Concord in Lauramie Twp.   Children of this marriage were *Lora Ann, Lester  and James Dexter.   Edmund died 08 Apr 1875 and is buried in Concord Cemetery; Margaret died in March 1880, burial place unknown.

 
Edgar C. DAVIS
, born 1835 in Fayette Co., IN; came to Tippecanoe Co. 1850-1860 with his parents Nathaniel W. and Delilah (Bishop) Davis, settling near Concord in Lauramie Twp.  Edgar married Lora Ann CLARK, dau. of Edmund Clark and Margaret Campbell, of Lauramie Twp.  Edgar and Lora moved to Jackson Twp., where he owned a large farm. Edgar died in 1909; Lora died in 1923.  They are buried in Wheeler's Grove Cemetery.

 
Andrew J. DOWNS, was born 1835 in Ross Co., OH, a son of William Downs and Rachel Green.  William brought his family to Tippecanoe Co. ca. 1845, settling near Battle Ground.  William died 1872 and Rachel in 1892.  Andrew was married July 1857 in Tippecanoe Co., to Mary Frances TUTTLE, dau. of Chester Tuttle and Nancy Moore. Mary died in 1900; Andrew in 1912.   Many members of the Downs family are buried in Battle Ground Cemetery. 

 
Hannah Marion FISHER was born 1827 in Allegeny Co., NY, a dau. of Isaac Fisher and Martha Gee.  She was married first abt. 1845 to James HAYWARD in Livingston Co., NY, and 2nd to Elijah HILL. Children from her first marriage were: *William Willard and Mary; children from her second marriage were: Catherine and Louise.  Hannah died in 1863 and is buried near her parents and husband Elijah Hill in Pierce Cemetery.

 
Jonathan FOX was born 27 Dec 1810 in Butler or Warren Co., OH.  He married 1) Eliza Ann REILY on 01 Jan 1833; and 2) Margaret Hawk on 10 Jan 1838, both marriages taking place in Butler Co., OH.   He came to Tippecanoe Co. bef. 1840, settling in Lafayette where he was the first butcher in the city.  In the mid-1850's he removed to White Co., IN, where he died in 1880.  His daughter by his first marriage, *Christina, married John SUMWALT and they lived in Union Twp.  Their daughter, Lizzie, married Joseph H. Hawkins and lived in Benton Co., IN.  Children of Jonathan's 2nd marriage: Catherine, Abner, Bonham, Eliza, Thomas, Vincent and Charles.

 
Henry GATES was born 20 Dec. 1789 in Greenbrier Co., VA, the son of Ralph Gates and Jane Wiley.  They removed abt. 1808 to Champaign Co. (now Clarke Co.), OH.  Henry was married in Clark Co. to Eleanor ROCK on 02 Dec.1819.  They came to Tippecanoe Co. in 1829, settling in Shelby Twp.  Henry and Eleanor had children: Rosanna, James, John, *Henry G., Minerva, William, Harrison, and Samantha; a son, Ralph, died in infancy.  Henry was a veteran of the War of 1812, serving in the company of his oldest brother, Capt. James Gates.  They were present during both sieges of Fort Meigs. Henry died 1862; Eleanor 1870.  They are buried in Burton Cemetery.

 
Levi HAWKINS
was born 10 Jan 1785 in Union Co., SC, a son of Benjamin Hawkins and Martha Hollingsworth.  He was married to Mary EVANS, a daughter of Joseph Evans and Esther Buffington, on 09 Sep 1809, in Butler Co., OH.  Levi came to Tippecanoe Co. bef. 1830, and was one of the founders of Farmer's Institute.   Mary died in West Elkton, OH in 1827; Levi died 25 July 1834 and is buried in the Farmer's Institute Cemetery.

 
Carmi JONES was born 1806 in Kanawha Co., VA, the son of William Jones and Elizabeth Jarrett.  The family came to Indiana ca. 1815, settling first in Wayne Co.; then in 1824 to the Wea Plains area of Tippecanoe Co. Carmi married 1) Henrietta TRIMMER in 1830 in Tippecanoe Co., and 2) Mahala DOUGHERTY, widow of Reuben Trimmer, in 1841 in Clinton Co., IN.  Children of his 1st marriage were: Oliver Laban, Amanda, Leah and William B.; children by his 2nd marriage were: Anna E., *Emma Q., Carrie D., Ira (died young), Talitha Q., Nancy and Virginia.  Carmi removed to Cloud Co., KS abt. 1869, where he died 13 Dec 1893; Mahala died 1860-1870.

 
William Henry MARTIN was born 12 Jan 1835 in Miami Co., OH, the son of James W. Martin and Nancy Roland.  William was married to Emma Quinia Jones, dau. of Carmi Jones and Mahala Dougherty, on 12 Jan 1864.  William died on 10 April 1909, and Emma died on 27 Nov 1924.  They are buried in Montmorenci Cemetery.

 
Robert Floyd SAYERS was born 23 Dec 1804 in Tazwell Co., VA, a son of Alexander Sayers and Susan Cecil.  He came to Tippecanoe Co. abt. 1826/27 and settled in Jackson Township.  He was married 1) to Martha T. McMillin on 11 Feb 1827;  and 2) to *Elizabeth Magee FROGGE on 28 July 1839 in Tippecanoe Co. to, a dau. of Arthur Robinson Frogge and Jane Thompson Richardson.  Elizabeth was born on 17 April 1819 in Fentress Co., TN.   Martha McMillin Sayers died 09 Jan 1839; Robert died 22 April 1872; and Elizabeth died 24 July 1893. They are buried in Sugar Grove Cemetery in Jackson Township.

 
John S. SHEETZ was born 1809 in Hampshire Co., VA, a son of Frederick Sheetz and Nancy Emerson.  He was married to Isabella PARKER, a dau. of James Parker and Rebecca Wolfe.   They came to Indiana in the mid-1830's, living for a few years in Benton Co., before coming to Tippecanoe. Children of John and Isabella were: John Robert, Nancy, *Margaret Rebecca, James, Mary, Hannah, Frederick, Martha, Thomas and Elizabeth.  John S. Sheetz died 05 Dec 1877, and Isabella died July 1877; they are buried in Greenbush Cemetery in Lafayette.

 
Chester TUTTLE was born 1795 in Oneida Co., NY, the son of Gershom Tuttle and Permelia Strong Clark.  The family removed from New York to Indiana bef. 1820, settling in Vigo Co.  Chester lived in Fountain Co. for a time, but married Nancy MOORE 05 Jan 1832 in Tippecanoe Co.  Nancy was born 05 Dec 1805 in Allegheny Co., PA.  Her parents are unknown; her siblings were: Elizabeth (m. Wm. Sherwood); Rachel (m. Charles Little); Mary (m. Philip Ensminger); Margaret (m. Townsend Cresse);  James and William B. Moore (m. Malinda White).

 
Henry Clay WATKINS was born 1848 in Sussex Co., DE, a son of Josiah Watkins and Elizabeth Gowty.  The family removed to Indiana in 1865, settling in Green Hill, Warren Co., where Henry married Jane GARRARD, a daughter of Samuel Garrard and Juliette Lemming, on 25 April 1872.  Henry and his family came to Tippecanoe Co. and tenant farmed near Battle Ground. Henry and Jane's children were: Gertrude, *Lewis, Myrtle, Fannie, William, Elmer "Pug", Harley Oliver, Clara, Theodore "Dode", Pearl and Alice.  Henry died in 06 Jan 1918 and Jane died in 18 Dec 1934. They are buried in an unmarked grave in Battle Ground Cemetery.
