Carl Westrich was 50 years old yesterday, and his wife and six daughters arranged and carried out a most agreeable Surprise for him which culminated last night. The daughters had their photographs taken in a group, enlarged and handsomely framed, which they presented to him, after the guests had assembled. The children were: Mr. and Mrs. Lawrence Weist, Mrs. Henry Punghorst, Mrs. George Willman, and Misses Maggie, Stella, and Ollie Westrich. The presentation was made by Miss Ollie, the youngest of the daughters. Feasting and dancing was the order of the night, the music being furnished by Freeman's orchestra. During the time the Schwabisher Saengerbund called and serenaded Mr. Westrich. Those present were: THE MR. December 3, 1891 From a newspaper clipping, I assume from the Lafayette Courier. ------------------------------- From the Lafayette Daily Courier, Lafayette, Indiana January 13, 1936: NONAGENARIAN IS CALLED BY DEATH Karl Westrich, 94, well remembered by older residents as the custodian of the German National Park south of the city when it was a popular recreation resort 25 years ago, died monday evening at his home, 1903 Stillwell street, after a ten weeks' illness. Born in Germany Dec 3, 1841, he came to this country many years ago and had lived in Lafayette ever since 1863, having been a cabinetmaker and road workman in his younger years. He was a member of St. Lawrence church, the Holy Name society and the Catholic Benevolent Legion. He was twice married, first to Margaret Trauma and later to Mary Vurpillat, both of whom preceded him in death. He leaves four children: Mary M. Hannah and John P. Westrich, both of Lafayette; Mrs. Homer Moore, Los Angeles, Calif. The body was taken to the Soller-Baker funeral home where friends may call after 6 Tuesday evening. Funeral services at St Lawrence church Thursday morning at 9, burial in St. Boniface cemetery. Heirs were listed as daughters Margaret Ackerman, Stella Moore, Lena Hannah and son John Westrich.
