Who Could Perform Marriages in

Tippecanoe County Indiana

1825-1925

This is a database of religious leaders and civil authorities who could perform marriages in Tippecanoe County during the first hundred years.  It is arranged alphabetically by surname and includes the Officiates name, position title, religious affiliation, township name and the dates served in that position.
  •  Minister/Pastor/Priest/Rabbi

  •  Constable/Sheriff

  •  Judge

  •  Mayor

  •  Justice of the Peace

Marriage records document people in a geographical place, at a specific time, and generally include the name of the person who officiated at the ceremony.  Identifying someone's religious institution, or location within the county, may lead to vital records or information that predate and supplement those kept by the county government.  For additional information about Tippecanoe County churches and "genealogy," see TIPCOA'S  Early Church Database.

The Tippecanoe County Genealogy Society (TIPCOA) extends its  special thanks to Kathy Hiser, TIPCOA member and TCHA Library Volunteer, who compiled and researched this database. It began with an index card file at the Alameda McCullough Research Library of the Tippecanoe County Historical Association (TCHA) and was supplemented by sources such as:

  •  Lafayette City directories

  •  Church histories: both published and vertical file materials

  •   A complete list is here

This is a work in progress. If you have have information that will fill in a blank or a biographical sketch to which we can link, please send it to L.A.Clugh and cite the source of the information
