| THE LIBERTY TREE |
Tree of Liberty &
Fountain in Potato Market on a very over cast day c2006. The Liberty Tree in Carlow commemorates the 1798 Rising of the United Irishmen. There were several hundred rebels slain in Carlow town and their remains are buried in the 'Croppies Grave', in Graiguecullen. The Liberty Tree was designed by John Behan who has skilfully created a fine memorial and an ambience round which people gather to relax in the Summer months. Oak Park House, Oak Park (Painestown), Carlow
The Bruen Family purchased Oak Park, formerly known as Painestown around the year 1775. In 1832, Henry Bruen commissioned William Vitruvius Morrison to redesign the house. It is remodelled in the classical style and retains the existing house as its central component. The front façade features a two-storey Ionic portico set on a pedestal. Today Oak Park House and demesne is the property of Teagasc – the agricultural research body. It has recently become the administrative headquarters for Teagasc. The old jail in Carlow
which was situated at the top of Bridewell Lane. Many of the 1798
rebels were interred here. We are told that many of the prisoners could look out through the top windows and see their fellow rebels being tortured and put to death in the barrack yard in Barrack Street. Soon after this photo was taken a major refurbishment of the building was undertaken by R.N. Gillespie Ltd. In the 1990s the building was demolished and is now replaced by modern shops and apartments. |
