The passing of the
late Margaret (Peg) Murphy
The death took place at Baltinglass Hospital of Margaret (Peg)
Murphy, late Moneyteigue, Aughrim, after a long illness, aged 87 years.
She was widow of the late John/Jack Murphy, who predeceased her by 12
years. She was a member of the well known Birthistle family, until she
married into the Murphys where she farmed with her husband Jack. Peg was
a good hard worker, she spent every Sunday doing her religious duty in
St. Kevin's Church, Ballycoogue, she had great devotion to her religious
life. She kept up devotion in looking after her husband and children,
she was a great neighbour and friend. She was noted for her homemade
bread, people admired her gifts of baking in those far off days she was
shopping by means of pony and cart, sometimes donkey and cart. These
were before the motor cars, you felt at home in Moneyteigue Home, alas
her kind is no more.
In the last number of years Peg wasn't in good health, before she
went to Baltinglass Hospital she was resident in her daughters house,
the last few years she has been a patient in Baltinglass Hospital, she
was held in high esteem by all who knew her from far and near, as was
evidenced when her remains were removed to St. Kevin's Church,
Ballycoogue, and after Funeral Mass her remains were interred in
Ballycoogue Cemetery. Fr. Paireac McCarthy, CC Avoca, officiated both
She is survived by sons Billy, Frank, Jimmy and Johnny; daughters
Lily and Pattie, sister Frances Kennedy, grandchildren, extended
relatives and friends. RIP.
