Staplestown Parish.

(Kindly donated by Miss A.G.Vize,1898)

     ‘The following tablets are erected inside Staplestown Church. On the south wall are placed these thee viz’ :

     "To the memory of HENRY FAULKENER ESQR of Castletown Co. Carlow, who departed this life 3rd May 1845. ætat 72. In him were blended a kindness of heart, a steadiness of friendship and a Christian Nobleness of principle which ever influenced the course of his useful life. Living and dying in the faith of the Gospel he has left to those who mourn his loss an humble but lively hope that while his memory is cherished here on earth his spirit dwells with Christ in glory. This tribute of affection has been erected but his bereaved wife"

     "In fond remembrance of SARAH NEWELL of Kilmeaney. By her sorrowing Husband W. H. NEWELL Esq. C.B., J.P this tablet is erected. Died 18th February 1885. A woman gifted by nature with a quick wit and a warm heart. By grace with the calm confidence of Christian Faith. Of many and varied accomplishments considerate and kind, a loving daughter, an affectionate sister and a devoted wife."

"Cold in the dust the perished heart my lie
But that which warmed it once can never die"

     "Sacred to the memory of THOMAS GURLY, Esq. of the County Carlow who departed this life on the 14th April 1816 in the 56th year of his age universally regretted. This tablet is erected by his son THOMAS GURLY Esq. as a small tribute of respect to his memory and esteem for his worth. Also to ELIZABETH MCDONOUGH his beloved wife, who died on the 31st December 1821 Aged 61 years."

(Surmounted with motto and crest) on N. wall’:

     "In memory of PHILIP BAGENAL of Benekerry, Co. Carlow. Died at Boulogne sur-Mer, France, June 24th 1856, aged 64 years, Job 16.22. And of his daughter LUCY ISABEL Died at Benekerry February 3rd 1845 aged 2½  years, MARK 10. 14.  Also to his sons WALTER PHILIP

     Captn H.M. 16th Lancers Died at Fort St. George, Madras November 25th 1868 aged 27 years. Eph 6. 13, 14. And JAMES PHIlLIP Asst Supt Staff of Indian Telegraph Died at Allahabad June 4th 1869 aged 21 years. Mark 13. 35."

‘(Surmounted with figure of officer in high relief) :-
     "In memory of Captain WALTER PHILIP BAGENAL., 16th Queens Lancers who died at Madras Nov 25th 1868. aged 27. Deeply regretted by his Brother officers by whom this Tablet was erected in affectionate remembrance."

On the W. wall are the three following tablets (surmounted by flame, urn on pedestal in high relief) :
     "Sacred to the memory of WALTER BAGENAL Esqre. of Dunleckney in this County who departed this life on the 18th June 1814 in the 52nd year of his age. This Monument is erected by ELIZABETH & MARIA BAGENAL his disconsolate Widow & Daughter to perpetuate the Memory of a Husband & a Parent Beloved, Honoured & respected. His mortal remains lie entombed beneath the adjacent stone."

(Surmounted by canopied urn’ :
     "Sacred to the memory of MAJOR BEADCHAMP COLCLOUGH of Mount Sion, county Carlow, who departed this life on the 26th of November 1858 in the 71st year of his age This monument is erected by his Widow to perpetuate the memory of a Beloved and Honoured Husband.
     "I am the resurrection and the life He that believeth in me though, He were dead yet shall he live. John xi. 25."

‘Tablet on W. wall (surmounted by crest, coat of arms, and motto. Lyre, viola & bow. Statue, head and bust on pedestal in high relief) :
     "Sacred to the memory of Sir ARTHUR BROOKE FAULKENER, who died at Evington, Gloucestershire, the 23th of May 1845, youngest son of HUGH FAULKNER Esq. of Castletown. In this Parish By FLORENCE COLE, daughter of the Revd HENRY COLE Brother of the First Earl of Enniskillen married ANN, daughter of DONALD MCLEOD Esq

of Lewis, Sound Learning, Refined Wit, Classic Elegance, Love of Freedom, and Benevolence of Spirit characterised His Published Sentiments and Public Conduct. That gentle Simplicity and amiable modesty, which accompanied his virtues and accomplishments endeared him to all in private life and adorned those fine arts which he excelled. He loved his Fatherland with Filial affection and polished manners brought Him into intimate connexion with the Princes and Eminent Men of his time. The purity, peity, and humility of the Christian adorned his life and consecrate his memory. This monument is erected by her whom his memory is hallowed by boundless and unceasing devotion and whose union of 85 years appeared as the happy vision of a lengthened Bridal day."

     ‘The following Tablets and Tombstones are in the burial-ground attached to Staplestown Church. There is a large vault wherein are deposited several coffins containing the remains of members of the Faulkener family. Its iron door bears their crest and motto (the latter is crumbling off) :-

     "In memory of WILLIAM HONE, Ratherogue, Carlow, who died November 17th 1890 aged 42.
     Come unto me all ye that labour and are heavy laden and I will give you rest."

     "In loving memory of JANE ANNE HENZELL Entered Into Rest 27th April 1892 aged 80 years.
Until the day dawn"

     "In loving memory of GEORGIE wife of WILLIAM HONE Died 7 March 1890 God is love Jesus wept"

     "ELIZA HATCHELL Died 5th Dec 1887."

     "In memory of GEORGE PHELAN Esq who departed this life June 22nd 1827 aged 30 years."

     "MARY VERENA BAGENALL B. April 4th 1871 D. February 13th 1889."

     "JESSIE DUNNE Died 3rd March 1897, Aged 73 years."

     "Sacred to the memory of The REVD HENRY SCOTT For 10 years Rector of this Parish who died 15th March 1877 aged 77 years And of his wife ELIZABETH who died 22nd Feb 1881 Aged 74 years.
Blessed are the dead which die in the Lord."

His corpse contains cut down in early bloom
His image is on all our hearts imprest
And his pure Soul now dwells among the Blest
Short was his Mortal Course
And well did he each part therein fulfil
With sweetest temper gentlest manners blest
Of spotless Truth and real worth possest
As Son as husband and as Friend approved
By all lamented as by all beloved."

"Here lieth the Body of SAMUEL WELWOOD late of Glasgow who departed this life May the 18th 1790 Aged 47 years Also his daughter ELIZABETH WELWOOD who departed June 8th 1790 aged 4 years Also his daughter JANE WELWOOD who departed August the 12th 1790 aged 14 months."

"Erected by THOMAS GIFFE late Parish Clerk of Staplestown to the Memory of his beloved wife HANNAH who depd this life on the 31st July 1847 aged 56 years Here also lieth the remains of her Maiden Sister ELIZABETH CASE who depd this life on the 31st March 1837 aged 52 years."

Here also lieth the body of Mrs ELIZABETH PERKINS daughter of the said RICHARD HOUGHTON who departed this life the 15th of October 1798 aged 45 years

"Here lieth the body of Mrs ELIZABETH WATTERS wife to PHILIP WATTERS of Staplestown Esqr who departed This life the 14th of March 1816 aged 58 years Also The body of the above PHILIP WATERS Esqr who Departed this life on the 5th day of March 1826 in the 75th years of his age ELIZABETH wife of HENRY WATTERS Eqsr died 12th May 1864 aged 78 years. HENRY son of the above PHILIP WATTERS Esqr died 21st of Novr 1864 aged 74 years"

"Here lieth the Body of SAMUEL ELLIOT who died January the 6th 1769 aged 96  Also the Body of ELIZABETH ELLIOT who died September the 23rd 1767 aged 84   Also In Memory of SAMUEL ELLIOT Esqr of Racroge Great Grandson of the above who died Novbr 26th 1858 aged 65 years trusting solely in Christ for Salvation"

"This tomb Erected by Mr WILLIAM ELLIOT in Memory of his wife Mrs. MARY ELLIOT who departed this life the 25th of February 1788 aged 72 years This inscription

is directed by THOMAS ELLIOTT of Racroge to Perpetuate the Memory of his Father the above-named WILLIAM ELLIOTT who died 6th august 1806 aged 82 years.  Beneath this stone rests the mortal remains of MARY ELLIOTT of Racrogue who departed this life the 20th of June 1836 aged 76 years Also To the Memory of THOMAS ELLIOTT Esqr of Racrogue.  Husband of the above MARY ELLIOTT who departed this life on the 28th March 1839 aged 84 years"

"Sacred to the Memory of the Revd FREDERIC FITZ JOHN TRENCH Rector of Staplestown who departed this life suddenly in the 51st year of his age at the Rectory on the 25th day of June 1859  He has been ten years Rector of Carlow and only ten months Rector of this parish. He was a faithful Minister of Christ and was loved and respected by all who knew him. He had just chosen as a text for his sermon to be preached the next day those striking words "Be ye also patient, stablish your hearts, for the coming of the Lord draweth nigh’ 
James 5.7.8. ‘He was not for God took him’ Gen. 5.24. Mark 13.33."
