death occurred at Hillview Nursing Home on Saturday 28th November 2009
of Paddy Lawlor, Ballickmoyler. Paddy who was active up to a few weeks
before his death was born in 1918, he celebrated his 91st birthday in
May of this year .... A member of an old established Laois family, his
own father, P.J. Lawlor died three months before he was born. Paddy was
reared by his grandmother and for the remainder of his life he worked
the family farm which had been occupied by his family for at least 4
generations. Paddy went to school in Arles, He played in the Arles Brass
Band in the 1920s. He also played football for Killeshin. Paddy was an
enthusiastic supporter of sports and in particular of the GAA, he had an
encyclopaedic knowledge of GAA games and players.
He was a regular
attendee at Card Drives and liked nothing better than a good game of
25s. Paddy was also a keen Greyhound breeder and achieved some success
with Spring Sprong and Hot Breeze both of which went on to win several
races. In 1960 he married Maura Brennan from Killeshin. He is mourned by
his wife Maura, sons P.J. (Killarney) Billy (Ballickmoyler) and
daughter, Margaret (Dublin), grandchildren, P.J., Christopher, Stephen,
David and Ciaran.
His remains were removed from his home in Arles to the
Church of the Sacred Heart, Arles on Monday 30th where they were
received by Father P.J. Madden, Fr. John Dunphy and Fr. Bill Kemmy.
Funeral Mass was celebrated by Fr, Tony O' Shea on Tuesday 1st December
with burial afterwards in the adjoining cemetery.
