Carlow through the Eyes of a “Blow-In”

This is a collection of articles which appeared in the Carlow Advertiser at various times since the first letter I wrote to that paper, on the late Padraig MacGamhna, in 1984. This was followed by a series of articles dealing with some of the many voluntary organisations with which I was associated since coming to Carlow in 1940. Towards the end of 1988 I submitted a rather lengthier one which appeared under the title of this book, and encapsulating my activities here over the past half century. This was published in five consecutive editions of the Advertiser and forms the first part of this document, which could be regarded as a sort of one-man-eye-view of Carlow town.

I wrote my autobiography entitled Three Score and Eleven in between times and many of the accounts therein are reproduced here.  My only regret is that I didn’t make a much more exhaustive and detailed pictorial record of the town. I must confess that I did very little actual research in the preparation of this book but relied almost entirely on a not too retentive memory. For any errors in this regard I apologise.

Quite recently I was requested by the County Carlow Heritage Society to prepare a video of my memories under their Living Memory Project. To this end a team of young enthusiasts, under the supervision of Brian Flynn, visited my home and made an hour-long recording, the contents of which were largely based on the material in this book. I wish to record my sincere thanks to Mrs. Sheila Maher and to her students in Carlow Vocational School for their invaluable help in preparing the typescript of this book and to Mr. Barry Duggan, Manager, Carlow Printing Co. for its production.
