Letters From America

Source: Inga Jackson

An old letter from 1917 written to my husband's Grandfather from a cousin in Hacketstown.

Eagle Hill, Hacketstown 3/1/18

"My dear Sam,

I was very glad to get your letter to learn that all were well although you never mention Wentworth. I hope he is keeping safe. May the good Lord keep him safe and end the war in his own good time.

Well I must tell you that I would have written sooner but I thought to have got some information but failed as there is is no one ? here that remembers the old stock of people. I am told you might get some information out of the Church book. Of course it is in Dublin and as for Mr. Hawkins house I could not get to know anything about Photos or Pictures of any of the family. Well you are right about a family of Jackson's in Williamstown but I don't know them. They go by Jacksons of the Brook.

(There is some more but mainly about the War, but she finishes).

Wishing you & all a Happy New Year. Yours Jane.

I thought somebody might like to hear about Mr. Hawkins. It seems as if he had something to do with Photography.

Cousin Sam is my husband, Brian Jackson's, grandfather: Jacob Frances Samuel JACKSON, who was born in Hacketstown in 1859. His parents were Jacob JACKSON and his mother Mary Frances (nee PAINE of Wicklow).

It looks as there are no more traces of the Jackson's in Carlow as the Letter writer talks about "all the old Stock has gone" and I myself is getting close to giving up my search. (By the way Wentworth Jackson survived the war and won a Military Cross in France.)

Re the letter writer. she was Samuel Jackson's cousin but I don't know what her married name was. She mentions: John, Jannie and my little granddaughter Mina.

Kind regards from Inga on a sunny winters day in New Zealand.
