These records are extracted from births in the 1864-1880 Civil Registration for the Registrar's District of Annascall, the Superintendent Registrar's District of Dingle, in the Union of Dingle.

The records here are alphabetized by surname. Unless noted, a parent registered the birth. Unless noted, the residence of the registrant is the same as listed for BirthPlace. Though the original record also lists the mother's married name, only her maiden name is shown here.

Further, contributer John Willoughby notes several points:

There were 2,451 births reported in the Annascall District from 1864 through 1880. Of that number, 2,310 records were legible enough to read. The remaining 141 are lost due to a combination of very poor writing and/or the filming was such that the data could not be read.

The English spelling is used as in labourer. The names are presented as spelled on the register, i.e., Denis and Mathew.

The alignment of the civil parishes changed rather drastically in 1870 from the original set up of 1864. The original individual registrations were not moved in order to follow the new alignment. It would have caused too much work. Rather, the registrations from 1870 on were placed in the new Districts, to wit.

• The Annascall Registrar's District was made up of the Ballynacourty, Ballinvoher, and Minard civil parishes.
• The Castlegregory Registrar's District was not changed. It was made up of the Killiney, Cloghane, Stradbally, and Ballyduff civil parishes.
• The Dingle Registrar's District underwent the greatest change. After the realignment it was composed of the Dingle, Garfinny, Kildrum, and Kinard civil parishes.
• The new Ventry Registrar's District was made up of the Ventry, Dunquin, Dunurlin, Kilquane, Kilmalkedar, and Marhin civil parishes.
• The new Blasket Registrar's District was made up of the Blasket Islands. I believe that there were 50 births there in the next eleven years. By creating the district, the parents were relieved of the necessity of traveling to Dingle to register the births.

It was not mandatory that births be registered in the civil parish where they took place. People went to whatever one was more convenient. For example, some parents who lived in the Cloghane Civil Parish which is in the Castlegregory Registrar's District, registered births in Dingle because it was closer to their home. Many parents who lived in Ballyarkane in Kilgarrylander Civil Parish of the Tralee PLU, registered their birth in Annascall. What fun!

Last but not least is literacy. Many parents did not report the births of their children for months. How could someone who could not read or write come up with the date of birth of a child who was born weeks if not months before? My own grandmother claimed to have been born in 1871 when, in truth, she was born in 1868. The date she chose made her younger than my grandfather who was born in 1871.
