County Kilkenny Ireland Genealogy

Civil Parishes of County Kilkenny

County Kilkenny was subdivided into 139 Civil Parishes in the 19th century (listed below) which were roughly equivalent to the parishes of the Church of Ireland (Anglican Church). Civil Parish Registers are an important part of Irish genealogical research, since they contain information on births, deaths and marriages. The locations of Civil Parishes have been mapped at this site on the Civil Parish Map, as well as on a larger Outline Map of Civil Parishes.
The parishes of Abbeyleix, Graiguenamanagh, Grangesilvia, Kilmacahill, Powerstown, Rathaspick, Shankill, Ullard and Wells are in the Diocese of Leighlin. Kilcooly parish is in the Diocese of Cashel, while all other parishes are in the Diocese of Ossory. All parishes are within the Probate District of Kilkenny. Refer to the Diocese page for more information and links to the diocese and parishes of the Church of Ireland.

The Civil Parish list below includes variant spellings of the parish names. The date of the earliest records is indicated next to some parishes on this list. Information regarding the content and timeframe of parish records can be found at Civil Parish Records. Brief parish descriptions taken from the 1837 Topographical Dictionary of Ireland are now on-line at GenUKI - Kilkenny Parishes.
