Query: I am doing research on my paternal famalies, Rohan and Knox,
I have copies of some birth/marriage cerificates for the ROOHAN and KNOX famalies
in Tullahought and Ballnacrony. Neither of these names appear in anything I have
been able to find other than in the Griffiths Valuation for Thomas ROOHAN and
Michael KNOX. Any idea how these famalies found themselves in these areas? Knox
is a Scottish name and I ma wondering if they were "planted" in
Kilkenny or the name Knox is some Anglocized spelling of an old celtic surname.
ROOHAN or ROHAN or ROUGHAN is not a common name in the area and was wondering if
they were also long term tenants in the area. Thank you for your cooperation,

Just found an entry at LDS for ANNE DILLON b 15/12/1871 Ireland. F. WILLIAM

Would you have any more details on WILLIAM DILLON and ANNE DUNN/DUNNING. Was

Query: Dear Sir/Madam,
I am writing to you for help with a long-standing family mystery.
I am currently tracing my family tree and have stumbled across some information
about my great-grandfather which I would like to either verify or dismiss.
My great grandfather's name, whilst living in Kilkenny was Edmund Whelan but
when he moved to England he changed it to Edward Phelan and I would like to know
why. At that time, circa 1912 I believe they was conflict between those who
wanted to remain part of the United Kingdom and those who wanted to be
independent.
According to the family history there was some sort of serious altercation
between my great grandfather and another person which was why he escaped Ireland,
moved to England and changed his name. He also told his children and
grandchildren (my mother) never to return to Ireland.
Rumour has it that this event was published in the Kilkenny People at that time.
His parents I believe were Daniel Whelan and Joanna Larkin and he married
Margaret Drea, originally from Kilkenny, in London in 1919.
I understand that you are extremely busy, but any help you can give me on this
story would be greatly appreciated as the only family member who claimed to know
the answer to the mystery recently passed away.
Kind regards,
Carly Davies

1841 census they were now known as ONeil, then in 1851 it was O'Neill. Not
sure, but as later marriage certificates show "X - thier mark", they
could not read or write and any accent they may have had, may have been
misunderstood.
I wish to know, if possible, where they came from in KilKenny, place of birth
given by Patrick in a later Census Return.

James. Except for John I know they all emigrated to Ohio, USA, between 1840-
1860, because I have burial info, & also all were listed in Ohio census data
as being born in Ireland. If anyone is researching this family or has
information on what locals might have been responding to to go to Ohio during
that period, I'd love to hear from them. Also if anyone has the names of the

Query: Pierce Collits was transported to
Australia in 1801, having been sentences in London in 1800. According to colonial
records, he was born in Thomastown, Kilkenny. There seems to be no record of his
birth, or his parents, same for his wife Mary Hardwick.
I notice that a search of Collits on this site gives no results. I would expect
there to have been other family, perhaps there has been a spelling/transcription
error in his name?
Any information you could provide or suggest would be greatly appreciated.
thanks in advance
Garry Convery
