Subject: Purtell/Whelan Connection?
Surnames: James Purtell/James Whelan
Query: Hi there! My g3 grandfather was James Purtell. His parents were John Purtell and Catharine McGrath. James was born in Ireland in 1860 or 1863. He was made a US citizen in 1893. In 1889, he married a Kate Whelan, also from Ireland, location unknown. Kate was born in 1865. Kate's father was James Whelan, her mother Nora Carroll. During my searches I came across a Purtell/Whelan connection. Since I have NO information on where James and Kate came from in Ireland, I am taking a HUGE guess by assuming there is a chance their families might have known each other before coming to the US. Another genealogy researcher suggested I look into seeing if they were from County Kilkenny as there were Purtells and Whelans that had married. Any information you could provide me would be greatly appreciated. Colleen Purtell-Tappen

Name: Carrol F. Dillon
Subject: Thomas Dillon
Surnames: DILLON
Query: Thomas Dillon was born in Kilkenny County, Ireland in 1792 and migrated to Pictou County, Nova Scotia between 1817 and 1821. Sometime around these dates, he married Elizabeth Dempsey and settled along the East Branch of the French River in the Piedmont Valley near Merigomish, Nova Scotia. The Census of Nova Scotia for 1851 lists Thomas and Elisabeth in the over 50 age group, as catholic and a farmer. In the household, there are 3 males under 10 and two females ages 10 to 20. The boys probably are his sons Matthew b. about 1819 and James Andrew b. 1821. The third male is unknown. He had four daughters. They are Mary b. 1826, Ellen b. 1841, Catherine b. 1831, and Agnes b. 1833. The 1817 Census for Nova Scotia does not list Thomas. Thus, it is thought that he migrated to Nova Scotia after that date. I would like to find some record of Thomas' birth in Kelkenny County and be able to get a start on research of the family in Ireland.

Subject: Ralph BUDDS ca 1820-30s
Surnames: BUDDS, HOLMES
Query: Information on Ralph Budds who m Margaret Holmes eldest? daughter of Edward Holmes and Elizabeth ? They had a number of children Susan, Edward, Benjamin, Annie, Maria and Sarah (evidence suggests that Ballynastick, Tipperary is where family originated/ended up). The latter 5 children and parent(s)went to NY (Ben apparently returned to Ireland). Susan came to Australia in 1856 aboard Morayshire at age 22 and 'in the family way' she gave birth 6 weeks after arrival to Henry Budds - fate unknown. On arrival shipping records indicate 'native place' as Killmanow? Co Kilkenny occupation - house and nursemaid and her parents as 'residing at Carrick-on-Suir, Co Kilkenny'? She later married Thomas Wellington and had a further 9 children (I have info about these). I am hopeful of tracking down any information on the marriage of Ralph Budds to Margaret Holmes I don't know when they departed for the US - Ralph was a Porter. Just to confuse issues Susans death certificate lists Castlecomer, Co Kilkenny as her place of birth. If possible I am also looking for any info on Ralphs parents and further evidence of Margarets mothers name(s). Any help would be great. Ross W Australia (PS re Commonwealth Games results at the moment just remember many ozzies have Irish descent!)

Byrn was from Kilkenny and he was aged 28 either at the time of mutiny, 1789, or the time of the court martial, 1792. Would a birth cert exist and what more can be found out. Query: My Great- Grandfather, William Elias Swan, supposedly came to Canada (or possibly U.S.) from Kilkenny County, Ireland, his birthplace. He was married, according to the Swan Family Bible, in Batavia, New York in 1861, but his children were born in Ontario, Canada. I wish I had any definite information other than this. One set of his Grandparents were surnamed Disney, and the other set, I must assume, were Swan. No record of the date of his birth, but I am estimating it must have been circa 1830 to 1840. I do not know if any other family members emmigrated with him, but suspect there may have been other Swans and/or Disneys. I have tried all free Search Engines here, but am greatly handicapped by all the Brouhaha concerning Walt Disney (who was a Cousin). The Swans are eclipsed by the Disney name. Can you be of any help with my Great-Grandfather Swan? I have a very clear idea about my relationship to the Disneys already. All information comes through my Father, who is pictured with the old man at about the age of 12. I do not even know when or where he died. Is my information too sketchy for anyone to help? Thank you so much for your attention.

Naturalization papers which I believe to be his indicate only that he came from Kilkenny and was under the age of 18 at the time of his arrival. All records I have collected thus far (census, childrens' birth records and his death record) agree that he was born in 1834. He first appears in Stoneham, MA as a shoemaker (a large shoe industry existed there at that time). His first son, Benjamin J., was born in 1859. By 1861 the family had moved to Boston where James became a marble polisher. His two eldest sons, Benjamin J., and Francis H. followed the stone trade for part of their lives. His two youngest sons, Robert E. and Frederick L. became grocers/butchers. He had one daughter named Loretta. His wife's name was Maria. If any of these names can help someone link me to a more specific location in Kilkenny for this family, I would love to hear from you. thank you,
