Gravestone inscriptions for Kileen and Kilbeacon are incribed to this family; most of whom died in 1841-43. The stone was erected by 2 surviving sons. In "The Irish Genealogist" Is written an article about Patick Aylward of Kileen m. to a Mary Walsh. Their son Ed is reported to have m. Kitty Raftis, daughter of William and Ellen Raftis)and migrated in 1860 to New York. The source cited is The Raftis Book. Does anyone knowif this is the proper name of the bood, or where I could find it? I think thid Ed and Kitty are my GGGrandparents, however, they were in Wisconsin by 1850 Census. Subject: Charles Butler, Earl of Arran, aka Edmund Murray
Surnames: BUTLER, MURRAY, MASON, ALEXANDER
Query: Written data says that our ancestor of long ago was Charles Butler, Earl of Arran, who married Elizabeth Crewe. He was born and acceded 8 Mar 1693; died 17 Dec 1758. He was the 3rd and last Duke of Ormonde. Our family tradition says that he changed his name from Charles Butler to EDMUND MURRAY for protection of himself and his family, and that he fled to England. We do not know if he changed his name to EDMUND MURRAY in Ireland, but believe that he did. We have an Edmund Murray listed who was born in Kilkenny, Ireland. He died 1854 in ? We have written data which says that a young lad 13-15 yrs of age, named EDMUND MURRAY, made the trip from Ireland to England. The earliest EDMUND MURRAY which we have in our family tree married ELEANOR SUSANNA. No dates, so we do not know if he was the young lad or not years later. They had two children. EDMUND MURRAY, and ELEANOR WINIFRED MURRAY. ELEANOR WINIFRED MURRAY married JOHN MASON, who was born in Hull, England, just outside London. We want to connect Charles Butler and these known Murrays. Wish to trace the lineage from Charles Butler to Edmund Murray who married Susanna, as we have succeeding lineage, though we do not know if it is entirely complete. Also, we wish to determine when, where and why Charles Butler changed his name to Edmund Murray. What was the lineage from Charles Butler, aka Edmund Murray, to the above family? Was the 13-15 yr old boy, Edmund Murray, the son of Charles Butler, aka Edmund Murray? Or were there other Edmund Murrays between them. Thank you for any help you give. Ezra McLaurin Alexander. <maxtrax@pdq.net> in Cypress, TX, USA. 18519 Headland Drive/Cypress, TX 77433-1119.

Details we have John married Mary Lannan (also born in Kilkenny - father Edward Lannan) in Newcastle-under-Lyme Staffordshire on 16th September 1867. John is aged 23 on the marriage certificate ( this would make his birth 1844).John's father is Edward Kelly. Edward is still alive but not present at the wedding. There is no sign of Edward in Newcastle-under-Lyme so we are assuming he could still be in Kilkenny in 1867. On the 1881 census in Newcastle under Lyme it states that John is 40yrs old - this would make his birth <1841>. Both John and his fathers occupations are labourers. John and Mary went on to have 4 girls. 1881 census Newcastle-under-Lyme - Ellen Kelly 13 yrs, Bridget Kelly 12 yrs, Mary Kelly 10 yrs and Kate Kelly 6 yrs. That is all we know. Please could you help - any information would be appreciated.

Subject: Mac Alexander

Query: My wife's ancestors said that they descended from the 3rd and last duke of Ormande, Charles Butler. Yet, we find that lineages of Ireland show NO children for Charles Butler and his wife. Another source suggested that some may have been illegitimate children of Charles Butler. The tradition says that this 'last duke' of Ormande, County Kilkenny, or a descendant, changed their name to Edmund (or Edmond) MURRAY. There was an Edmund Murray who was born 1775, as I recall, in County Kilkenny. The MURRAYS went to England. The first MURRAY in England seems to have been an Edmund Murray who m. Eleanor Susanna and they had two children: Eleanor Winifred Murray born October 1844 in England, and a son, Edmund Murray. Eleanor Susanna's husband, Edmund Murray, died in 1854 in England. This is where the record becomes clearer. Nothing known of Edmund Murray, but, his sister, Eleanor Winifred Murray married John Mason, Jr., who lived at Hull, England, out from London. John Mason was born 1841 in Hull, England and died in Mississippi, USA, about 1924. Winifred died about 1906 in Kentwood, Tangipohoa Parish, Louisiana, USA. Ancestors passed down through the generations a dress which was worn by a family member, Lady WALKER. None of us know of the relationship. Lady Walker, as she was known, wore the dress before some court function, according to tradition. We do not know if the Butlers were related to the Walkers, or if they changed the name from Walker to Butler, as they served their Lord (as butlers). Any clue or information regarding the MURRAYs in County Kilkenny back then, or even today, would be appreciated. Thanks a lot, Mac Alexander of Cypress, TX, USA.

Query: Here is the information I have about the John Fitzgerald that I am researching. I have extensive family history records for this family in Canada which I will be pleased to share with other Fitzgerald family researchers. John Fitzgerald who was recruited into the British army in 1806 at he age of 21. British army records indicate that he was born in St. James Parish, County Kilkenny circa 1785. He was a weaver by trade. Subsequently, at least two of his children James and Ann came to Canada prior to 1829. I think that John Fitzgerald also was in Canada prior to 1829 based on his name being shown as a bondsman on his daughter Ann's marriage records in 1829. James Fitzgerald , born in Ireland, died in Canada on June 16, 1855 at the age of 49 from which I have concluded that he was born in 1805 or 1806. ( m. Elizabeth Morris 1832) Ann Fitzgerald, born in Ireland , died in Canada on January 16, 1871 at age 60 from which I have concluded that she was born in 1811. ( m. Thomas Brown) I think : there was a third son : John, - and - the wife of John ( b. 1785 ) may have been a Susan / Susanah.

Query: Hello, I am looking for any useful info about John ALLEY and his wife, Jane SIDES, who lived in the Queens Co/ Kilkenny area in the 1800- 1880's. He was a Sergeant in the Royal irish Constabulary and at the time of his death was receiving a pension from the RIC. (So far I have not ordered this record but that is next on my wish list!) They had at least the following children- Henry, Frances, Charles, Frederick, John, Matilda, Mary Jane and Anna. Charles, Fred and Mary Jane went to the USA in about 1856. Henry, John and Matilda went to New Zealand about the same time. Anna married Joseph Reid and stayed in the same area at least until the death of her father John in 1888. I would like to know how I can get hold of a copy of his will. He was buried in Durrow but had lived in Loughill and Ballinakill. I would also be very interested to contact any of Anna and Joseph's descendants. They had a number of children including Fanny, Richard, Anna, Sarah, Matilda and John born from 1871- 1881. Does anyone know where I could find census or any records in the 1880's that would show details of this family (Reids) and where they lived. They were Church of Ireland and may have lived near her father, John, in either the farm, Loughill, Abbeyleix, or in a nearby area. Thank you for any assistance.

Query: My great-grandmother taught us this little nursery rhyme song. There once were two cats of Kilkenny. Each thought there was one cat too many. So they fought and they fit. They scratched and they bit. Till excepting their nails and the tips of their tails, Instead of two cats of Kilkenny, There wasn't any. The writer Louis Lamour often uses the term "a Kilkenny" when a situation in his western novels was about to turn into a mutual slaughter. This leads me to believe that some actual historical event big enough to be known in America in the late 1800's is behind the little rhyme. I have looked through your timeline but can't exactly pin it to one event. I would be so greatfull if you have any information for this has been a question of mine for at least 15 years now. I have no idea if my great-grandmother knew this song because it was popular at the time or because she was a decendant of immigrants from there.

Subject: Peter John Campion, b. abt. 1833 Co.Kilkenny
Surnames: CAMPION, FEENEY
Query: Peter John Campion, b. abt. 1833 Co. Kilkenny, Ireland. His naturalization in Massachusetts, U.S.A. states that on 16 Feb. 1876, in Fall River, Peter Campion of Co. Kilkenney, was granted citizenship. His death record of 18 Sept. 1891, age 58, gives his place of birth as Ireland, and names of his parents: James and Ellen He was a Roman Catholic, and was married to Mary Ann (Feeney). Her death record 24 June 1910 age 75, gives her birthplace: Ireland, and her parents names: John and Bridget Feeney. Is there any way I can use immigration records that would place Peter more exactly in Co. Kilkenny? I have not found a marriage record for Peter and Mary in the United States. I do have birth records for their 3 children (CT and RI). The oldest child, Annie was born 18 Nov. 1862 in CT. That is the earliest date I can place them in this country (U.S.). Is there any way I can trace them further? Thank you, Carolyn

Query: G'Day, My name is Joe Shanahan and I am writing from Cape Breton Island, Nova Scotia, Canada. I am currently doing some research into my family name of Shanahan (changed from Shannahan during the 1930s). At this point, we have traced our roots back to a gentleman named JOHN SHANNAHAN. His grave site in Victoria Mines, Cape Breton, Nova Scotia reads "Native of Ashtown, Co. Kilkenny, Ireland". He was born in 1806. We have been unable to find the town of Ashtown in Kilkenny. Apparently there is an Ashtown near Dublin. I have also heard that Ashtown Kilkenny, may actually be Piltown...Any help would be greatly appreciated. --------------------------------------------------
