County Louth Ireland Census Records & Substitutes

County Louth Census Records

A government census was taken of the all of Ireland in the years 1821~1831~1841~1851~1861~1871~1881~1891~1901 and 1911. Unfortunatly 1821~1831~1841 and 1851 were almost compleetly destroyed in 1922 in a fire at the P.R.O. (Public Record Office). Even worse the census records for the years 1861~1871~1881 and 1891 were completely destroyed earlier, by government order.

What this means is that the earliest surviving compleet census records are for 1901 and 1911. The original 1901 and 1911 Census can be consulted at the National Archives of Ireland. A microfilm copy of the 1901 census is available at the LDS Family History Library in Salt Lake City or at a LDS Family history Center. I have some of the 1901 census for Louth on this site.

Some of the 1821 census for Louth did survive the fire. . This census, organized by townland, civil parish, barony and county, took place on May 28th 1821, and covered the entire population of Ireland. It recorded the following information ~ name ~ age ~occupation ~ relationship to the head of the household ~ acreage of land holding ~ number of storeys of house

Charleton Trust Fund Marriage certificates 1795~1862

. Starting in 1795 a small marriage gratuity was offerd to members of the Protestant working classes. To qualify for ths fund a marriage certificate had to be submitted. The marriage certificate recorded occupations and fathers names and was signed by the local Church of Ireland clergyman. These certificates are now in the National Archives. They are most useful for the years before the registration of marriages became the law. They are indexed in National Archives Accessions Vol. 37.
