Church Records in Louth Ireland

Understanding Church Records and Parish Records In Ireland

There are three kinds of parish records in Ireland. The Civil Parish. The basic geographical units used by the government in early censuses, tax records and land surveys. Church of Ireland Parish Records. Catholic Church Parish Records. In the sixteenth century the Reformation came to Ireland. This caused the parish structures of the Church of Ireland and the Catholic Church to diverge. As a general rule the Church of Ireland retained the older medieval parochial divisions (Civil Parishes) wile the Catholic Church had to create new and larger parishes. Now because the Church of Ireland retained the older parochial divisions which were also used for administrative purposes by the government. The Church of Ireland Parishes are virtually the same as the Civil Parishes. On this page you will find a list of the 64 Civil Parishes in County Louth Ireland as they were in the mid 1800s and the 20 Roman Catholic Parishes of County Louth before the 20th century. For the Roman Catholic Parishes Information is given about the available church records for Baptisms, Marriages, and Deaths.
