The Irish Surnames Brennan, Corcoran, Coffey and Gahagan in County Mayo and County Roscommon, Ireland

The research data compiled in this website section covers surnames Brennan, Corcoran, Coffey, Gahagan and all of their known variations such as Brannon, Brannan, Coffee, Coffey, Coffy, Gaughan, Goaghan, and Geoghegan, Goghan etc., I am also including Surnames Cochrane and Goggin in all record compilations. I have presented the Catholic Church records by spouse's surname. In doing so, I have made many other Irish Surnames readily searchable in this website. (If your Irish ancestor or their family married a Brennan, Corcoran, Coffey or Gahagan or any variations of these surnames they will be presented in the my Catholic Church Records section alphabetically by your ancestor's surname.) I have also been documenting the Frain and McNulty baptismal and marriage records as I work my way through these films. I haven't put any of these records on line. If you have a McNulty or Frain ancestor in one of these Catholic Parishes, please feel free to contact me and I will check my transcriptions and see what I have documented for you.

The following data is included below: Surnames Brennan, Corcoran, Coffee, Gahagan and all variations in Surname Distribution Maps, Directories, Griffith's Valuation- County Mayo, Church Records- County Mayo (expanding to County Roscommon in the future), book references etc., I am also documenting all Brennan, Corcoran, Coffee, Gahagan (and all variations) documented as being born in County Mayo or County Roscommon in the 1851,1861,1871 and 1881 England Census Records. If you find your families in these records please contact me - I would love to hear from you and would be happy to share all I have on that family with you. My goal is to tie these families together through the church records, census records and all other available sources as well as to provide their final destination to benefit everyone in the search for their family.

Focus of my research week of May 21, 2012:

Mayo Church Microfilm Research: I continue to work my way through the remainder of the Swinford film 926020; as I do so I have created pages on the Brennans from the Townland of Kinaffe (there were 75 different Brennan families in the Swinford films). These pages include spouses surnames A-D; Doherty- Loftus and Mannion to Walsh. I have also begun a page on the Brennans of Cloonaghboy, Kilconduff Civil Parish, County Mayo, Ireland. There is a lot of replication between the two films 1279233 and 926020 for Swinford; but on many occasions entries appear more ledgible on one film than the other, have additional details, a record the other didn't or that I may have missed, so I feel compelled to complete both films. I have completed putting baptismal records on line up through September 1875 and marriages from 1846-1856. I will resume the Swinford film this week as I have completed the Kiltimagh film.

I have identified 262 Brennan, 8 Corcoran, 1 Coffey, 1 Gahagan, 1 Goggin and 1 Geogan familiy in the Kiltimagh Roman Catholic Parish microfilm 926012. I have started a page analyzing the 18 Brennan families that listed Kiltimagh as their Townland in Church, Census, Griffith's Valuation and other records. I have also done the same with the Brennans from the Townland of Lisduff.

Passenger Lists: I am beginning an analysis of the Brennan, Corcoran, Coffee and Gahagans that traveled between Liverpool and the Port of New York in a quest to find my Brennans and Corcorans! I have created pages on all four surnames and all variations that are divided by quarters. These pages will gradually be added to time permits. I have completed NARA rolls 108, 107, 106, 105, 104 and 103 (all of the 4th quarter of 1851 and part of the 3rd quarter) and am in the first part of roll 102 that covers July of the 3rd quarter of 1851.

Roscommon Church Microfilm Research: My research extends to the Roscommon Catholic Parishes that line the Mayo/Sligo/Roscommon border. Thus far I have completed both films of Ballaghaderreen, one from Loughglynn and am ordering the Boyle film this week. Logistically speaking Boyle Catholic Parish roughly lies east of Gurteen Catholic Parish in County Sligo and Charlestown Parish in County Mayo. Charlestown Parish had an extremely high concentration of Brennans. Ballaghaderreen is roughly east of Knock Cathlic Parish in Mayo (and had all four surnames- Brennan, Corcoran, Coffee, Gahagan) and Loughglynn is east of Aghamore Parish in Mayo. Castlerea Catholic Parish that lies just south of Loughglynn is only available in Ireland unfortunately, but I have noted some records on familysearch.org for this parish and I have added the ones I viewed while in Dublin. Eventually I also plan to order microfilm on Ballinlough (just south of Castlerea), Fairymount (just east of Loughglynn) and Ballinasloe, Creagh and Kilclooney a Parish between Ballaghaderreen and Boyle that includes Civil Parishes Kilnamanagh, Kilcolagh and Esternow. My four third great grandparents appear to be split between Mayo and Roscommon and I feel they most likely resided somewhere between the Swinford, Kilmovee, Kiltimagh areas of Mayo and the Ballaghaderreen, Loughglynn Parishes of Roscommon but I plan to leave no stones unturned to narrow down their origins!

Irish in England Census Research:

I am continuing my research in the 1841 Manchester St. George Census records Districts (currently on District 26 of 43) after which I will continue on to Manchester (1851), Leeds (1851), Liverpool (1851) and Wolverhampton (1851) census records as I have time.

I have just added a page on the Michael Boyle and Bridget Brennan family of Huddersfield England and have updated the Thomas Boyle and Anne Fili Family of Huddersfield page. Information has been added to the John Brennan/Mary (Sarah) McKew Family of Huddersfield, England page with evidence of their origins in County Sligo, Ireland. A marriage record was added to the Patrick Corcoran/Mary Shaw Family page. Wendy Corcoran shared several records they uncovered relating to two Huddersfield families Thomas Corcoran and Margaret Bones and Michael Corcoran and Martha Gledhill- I have updated both of these pages and show one descendents journey from Huddersfield to Manchester to Hagerstown, Maryland- Harry Corcoran, son of Michael Corcoran and Martha Gledhill.

Ireland Pictures: Thus far I have added 43 pictures from our Ireland trip to the Research Aids section of my website. We took pictures of all the major market towns of County Mayo in the 19th Century and the existing Catholic churches and I hope to get them all online down the road. I also explored the areas around Ballaghaderreen, Frenchpark, Loughglynn, Castlerea, Strokestown and Boyle in Roscommon and we took pictures I would like to post as well.
