After the Revolutionary War ended in America, England could no longer dump criminals in the colonies as

they had previously done for a hundred years or more. So the British had to look elsewhere to set up more

prisons to hold criminals, and one of those places to which Irish prisoners were shipped was Australia.

Note that searious crimes like murder, robbery, or kidnapping, were often sentenced to death, therefore the

prisoners whom were actually shipped to Australia were normally not considered dangerous criminals.
