Kilconnell Abbey, built by O'Kelly and where many chiefs of the clan were buried.

Barnaderg Castle near Tuam, one of about sixty castles built by, or captured in war by, the O'Kelly. This castle set on 10,000 acres and the laws had been changed to kill the Gaelic method of passing down property to the eldest son.

Under the British rule, 90% of property would go to the people, and only 10% to the son. In old age the O'Kelly sold this castle to avoid losing 9,000 acres which the state would take without renumeration. That law plan over time reduced many of the wealthy families to abject poverty, and killed the Gaelic Clan systems.

Maine Mor O'Kelly long before the family was known as Ceallaigh the O'Kelly, Maine Mor owned nearly one million acres known as Ui Maine/ Later Hy Many (My Land).

The four oldest clans in the area were the O'Kelly, O'Conor, O'Brien and deBurgio (Burke). These families intermarried many times over two thousand years, and today it could be said of an O'Kelly walking down the street, that you are looking at four famous and wealthy Clans, three of ancient Gaelic/Irish blood, and the other an Anglo Norman invader from France.
