MOFFITT (1999) Raymond Gillespie Series Editor. Maynooth Studies in Local
History. Dublin and Portland, OR: Irish Academic Press. ISBN 0716526824
A 65 page study of a rural self contained diocese with Sligo parishes:
Castleconnor, Kilglass, Easky, Kilmacshalgan, Skreen, Dromard, Ballysadare,
Killoran, Emlyfad, Killaraght, Achonry, and Kilmacteigue. The other ten
being in Co. Mayo.
The purpose of her study was to establish why the Church
of Ireland died in certain areas and survived in others, with reference to
the influence of the land acts, the creation of the Irish Free State,
emigration and education. The diocese population in 1870 was 3.9 per cent or
7,352 persons. In 1941 it had fallen to 2,473. In general both communities
lived side by side without animosity or undue
distress. Mixed marriages had always taken place but both churches
discouraged them.
