NAME HELP!
Tricia sent the following information to help you in your Irish research.
A lot of the names (as you may have suspected) were open to individual
interpretation by the priests especially if they weren't sure of the exact
translation. In that case, they recorded whatever looked and/or sounded like
it was the best answer to the name. To add to the confusion there was often
no direct Latin word for the name, so, therefore, no direct translation.
Sometimes, you just have to guess at what you see.
To add more to the confusion the letters "i" and "j" in Latin are virtualy
the same and often interchangeable . If you'd be able to lay your hands on a
good Latin-English dictionary and go to Latin section and look up all words
beginning with a "J" it might tell you to "see i". Remember that when you
see the list below for names that begin with "J".
For example, the words over the crucifix of our Lord Jesus Christ are "INRI"
not "JNRJ"..........."Jesus of Nazareth, King of the Jews".
