    Sir,
    Agreeable to the resolution passed at the meeting of the Town and Harbour Commissioners,... You will see that our town requires immediate attention, when we find more than the seventh part of the population in want of employment... We find the state of trade as follows:
    In
    50 corn & provision stores & yards
    2 breweries
    1 distillery
    1 flour-mill
    1 coach-factory, there were employer in 1843 and 1844, averaging both years, (the greater number in 1844).
    In 1843 & 44 - 1845 - unemployed
    Coach makers - 12 - 8 - 4
    Coopers - 107 - 42 - 65
    Labourers - 684 - 357 - 327
    Carters - 45 - 33 - 12
    Quay-porters - 50 - 20 -30


    Beside several others in various trades there are 438 men, who have, on an average, a family of five, including a wife, children or aged and destitute parents; thereby making more than 2560 souls... We will feel most happy to find this our report meet the attention which the cause of humanity, the safety of the town and county demand,...

    The importance of this document is that it shows how vulnerable the economy of Sligo town (population 10,000) was to the failure of the potato crop in 1845. Sligo had almost no manufacturing industries and the chief source of prosperity was its maritime trade. The bulk of the trade was the export of corn, meal, flour, butter and provisions. Consequent to the potato failure other crops were being retained for subsistence rather than being sold or exported.
