NOTES
Chapter #27 of POINTers In Person held our July 12, 2003 meeting. It was a beautiful Saturday morning and six members were in attendance. Jerry Farenga #1763, Rose and Peter Ducato #1812, Debbie and Steve Stecker ##2226, and Dan Niemiec #2304. Jerry Farenga discussed his recent trip to Salt Lake City, Utah. He found it a lot easier to go and look at the films from his hometown In Potenza. He also used the scanning equipment to scan his images and save them to a CD and bring home. This is a lot easier than standing and waiting for that machine and copying the data you need. Jerry also brought for our show and tell a document from his mothers home town. This document was his mothers report card from the town of Eboli, Campania, In the province of Salerno. Debbie Stecker brought several problems to our group discussion. She is trying to find the missing ship of her ancestor. The ship is not listed in the Morton Allen directory for 1906. The ship she thinks is the "A'Italia. Debbie brought for show and tell her grandfathers Navy scarf. He became a US citizen as a result of his Navy service in World War I. Steve Stecker brought a paper entitled "Golden Jubilee" it is a paper from 1964. The paper was started in 1914. It was the papers 50th anniversary edition. Most of the people in this paper were his relatives including his mothers and fathers photographs, because they were early residents of Chicago Heights, IL. Dan Niemiec was contemplating his trip to Italy in September. He is busy trying to organize all the data he needs to take. The civil records for the province of Bari for 1911-1929 have just been released by LDS, so Dan is hoping to work with these films prior to the trip. (The microfilm numbers for these films are not yet in the FHL catalog. They can be found at
http://www.rootsweb.com/~itappcnc/bari) We discussed many of the requirements
for planning a trip to Italy, including electric converters, extra batteries (for cameras), how many days of clothes to pack (take fewer clothes and do laundry while over there), how much money to take (Cash Station cards can be used in Europe), a CD ReWritable drive (in case something happens to the laptop or hard drive, the photos can be salvaged), and gifts to buy (Compact Discs and sports caps are favorites). Many people have also suggested taking a short flight from Rome to Bari rather than taking the train. Dan brought for show and tell children's books in Italian, a gift from a cousin. These books cost only one nickel in 1908. They even had beautiful black and white Illustrations and photographs. Peter Ducato brought to the group a book titled "Lodging in Italy's Monasteries." This book is a great source on finding lodgings besides hotels in Italy. It lists all the monasteries all over Italy and Sicily. Lodging in these monasteries is not only economical, but it is an experience you will never forgot. These monasteries have beauty of scenic proportions in the Italian Mountains, and priceless relics painting by local Italian artists hanging on the walls. The rooms are clean and affordable, the food is made by the chef on staff at the monasteries and is wonderful. Rose Marie Ducato brought her show and tell to the group. She has a second passion besides genealogy. Her hobby is scrapbooking . She discussed how to incorporate your genealogy in your family albums. She brought and showed how to do a pedigree chart and photographs from Family Tree Maker. You can incorporate all those documents of birth, baptism and marriage, death and even photographs of the grave sites. The group adjourned to Dominick's for lunch and continued discussion. Despite the low turnout it was an informative and lively meeting. Our next meetings are Saturday, September 6th and November 8th at the same location.
