NOTES
On a beautiful,
sunny, warm, Saturday morning on September 6, 2003. PIP#27 Chicago North,
held its fourth meeting of the year. Seven members were in
attendance. It was hard to believe but our co-founder Dan Niemiec #2304
was in attendance. He was packed and ready to leave the next day with family
members to Bari, Italy. He had all he could do to contain himself with
his excitement. Dan has been preparing for this trip for many years. He,
however, found the time to help our guests with all their genealogy problems.
He assures us that upon his return, he will give a presentation of his
trip and research strategies in Italy.
David "Jan" Cella, first timer to the PIP meeting. He has
been doing his family genealogy for many years but has had the usual stumbling
blocks. We advised David of the POINT organization and how to join.
We brought several past issues of POINT directories to pass out. They
were amazed to see how many Italian names in the directories. They were
surprised to see their surnames in the POINT directories.
Nancy Colby first timer to our group, got bit by the genealogy bug. She
started a memory family quilt. A family member brought a Italian document
to her to have translated. Since then she has started her quest for her Italian
heritage. Paul Douglas got some help when we advised that the town of his
ancestors has been microfilmed.. Paul's ancestors have eluded him somehow, he
cannot seem to find them at the Ellis Island website. We advised Paul, he
needs to find the Declaration of Intention as well as the naturalization papers
first. This will help him to find the date his ancestor came to America and the
ship that they sailed on.
Tony Garofalo #1701 added to our group attendance and discussion. She has been
doing her genealogy for over twenty years. Peter Ducato #1812, was in
attendance and found our discussions solely on genealogy a real learning
experience. We related to the group that it is not to early to
start thinking about the POINT national convention. The date is set for October
of 2004 in Kansas city.
Our next meeting is set for November 8, 2003, it is our final meeting for the
year. A presentation will be given by Dan Niemiec on his trip to Bari, Italy.
We will then adjourn for our annual banquet. Rose Marie Ulizzi-Ducato
#1812, will serve her famous homemade Italian Cannoli's. Our next
years meeting dates for 2004, are tentatively set for March, May, July,
September, and November.
