Linda Fortunato-Davenport explains the ropes to beginners and experts.
Chapter #27 Chicago North Meeting Notes:
The Chicago Chapter North #27 met at the Schaumburg Library on
Saturday, November 13, 2004. It was our final meeting of the year and eighteen
members were in attendance. First timers included, Maria Svihla, James Masi,
Audrey Falese, and Ron Alfonso.
Our guest speaker was Linda
Fortunato-Davenport. Her topic for discussion was “Organizational
Skills”. We had our Italian language
tested with a short list of Italian words. Most of them to be found on Nascita,
Matrimonio, and Morto documents. If you
are reading these sometime difficult documents. You need to have knowledge of these words to be able to translate
the documents. Linda not only helped the new attendee’s but also even some of
us old time genealogists found these
words helpful.
She brought copies of the Nascita, Matrimonio,
and Morto documents. She guided us through each one and showed us
where to look for names, dates and helped us decipher each document. The sometime difficult Italian writing got
easier by knowing how the person writing these documents made certain letters
of the alphabet.
With Linda Fortunato – Davenport
speaking and our founder Dan Niemiec at the control of the Internet, we
found James Masi’s father on the http://www.stevemorse.org site. This site is a searching tool if you are
having difficulty finding those elusive ancestors by searching the Ellis Island
site. They also showed how to navigate the familysearch.org site. Linda and Dan searched for a few people
based on questions from the group and we were able to find several of them. Others had ancestors who came before 1892
and thus are not on the Ellis Island or Steve Morse web sites.
We adjourned for our
annual luncheon at Lou Malnotti’s for pizza, pasta and salad. As always Rose Marie Ducato brought her
legendary Cannoli’s. We look forward to a great holiday season and a fruitful
new year.
Our meeting schedule for 2005 are as follows.
March 12th, May 14th, July 9th, and November 12th. Please check our website for updates and
changes. http://www.rootsweb.com/~itappcnc/index.htm
