POINTers In Person Chapter
#27 met on July 9, 2005 at the Schaumburg District library in Schaumburg, Illinois.
Thirteen enthusiastic Italian genealogists gathered for a lively
discussion on many topics. Noticeably absent from the group was our own Dan
“Daniello” Niemiec, #2304. He was teaching a class on Italian Genealogy at our
own prestigious Newberry Library in Chicago.
Ray Mannarelli, first timer
discussed the Sorenson Molecular Genealogy Foundation study. It is a study for
collecting DNA . Also there is the National
Geographic /IBM study of DNA and distant ancestry is at http://www5.nationalgeographic.com/genographic. We discussed his participation in the DNA study. He advised us that he
would be willing to give a presentation on this exiting subject at one of our
future meetings.
Maria Svihla, is working on a
family book. She hopes to complete this task by December and give her family a
book on all the research she has accumulated. ( Maybe she will be inspired by
today's presentation ). Joy Hamm,
is taking a trip to Italy very soon. Terry Jackson, has been doing his
Italian genealogy for fifteen years.
Found out that his mother was adopted and is of Italian descent. Ann
Moro, is researching in the areas of Bascilicata, and Calvello in Potenza. She brought a new genealogy buddy with her
today, her name is Ellen Galizia. She is just starting her pursuit of her
Italian genealogy.
Rose Marie Ulizzi-Ducato,
#1812 gave her presentation on “Family Books Made Easy”. She demonstrated how easy it is to do a
family book using the software program Family Tree Maker. You can easily make over thirty-seven books
and over five hundred items for each of your books. Rose has been doing family books with Family Tree Maker (FTM)
over ten years. She has done family books for her Ducato, Breaux, and Ulizzi
families. Rose showed us all how to do
a family book and have it ready for
that important family reunion . You can easily print out the book or copy
the book onto a CD using a PDF format.
Your relatives then can put the CD into their computer and review the book page
by page. They can even print out their own book if they wish to. She demonstrated how easily FTM can import
documents, photos, and incorporates stories into your own family book. You can include a table of contents, a index
and even dedicate that book to a special family member.
Our discussion on POINT not
having the Annual directory got a lot of mixed reviews at our meetings. Their disappointment knowing that the name
database will not be included in the directories any longer. The feeling is that until an on-line method
for managing and searching the database is ready, the original directory and
surname submission should not have been stopped. The whole thing is in limbo and the surname database is a
compelling reason for people to become POINTers and we don’t know what to tell
them regarding surname submissions or searching.
Our next meeting will be our
up and coming “Discover Your Italian Roots” conference on September 17,
2005. The conference will be held at
the Italian Cultural Center in Stone Park, Illinois. Registration form is at, http://www.chicagoitalian.org or contact our own Dan Niemiec at italianroots@comcast.net. Our final meeting for the year will be November 5, 2005
at Schaumburg District Library. Our
tentative speaker will be Gary L. LiVacari, D.D.S. He will be presenting “My Driving Tour of Mount Carmel
Cemetery”. He will also present “Family
Tree CD, Descendant Narrative Book”.
