NOTES FROM JULY 13TH, 2002, by Rose “Nonna Rosa” Ducato

Ten Pipsters met at the Schaumburg library on Saturday, July 12, 2002.

Attendee's were:

Audrey and Bob Allen #1771
Rose and Peter Ducato #1812
Jerry Farenga #`1763
Debbie Stecker #2226
Ron La Penta
Geneva Shay #3252
Prudie Marose
Ann Moro

Debbie Stecker has been doing her genealogy for over 10 years. Decided to make the meeting and add to our lively conversation.  She would like to know how to go about getting  records for her grandparents home.

Audrey and Bob Allen brought a family tree dating back to 1500. They hired professional researchers to help in their genealogy quest. They had a trip to Salt Lake last year. They also plan on attending the POINT conference in October. Bob advised and stressed emphatically that he strongly recommends the "Illinois State Genealogy Society Conference that meets every July.

Jerry Farenga talked about his recent trip to Italy. He advised us that he has 23 rolls of films waiting for his review at the family history center. He brought his digital camera to use taking photos of the documents in Italy.
He said that they were good quality and is a good way to document these resources.

Prudie Marose is new to our group. She is having trouble looking at the Italian films and how badly they are to read. She brought one Italian document to our group for further investigation.  We advised her once she has
done this it does get easier as times goes by.

Ron La Penta wants to know exactly when his grandfather came to America. He almost has it narrowed down to two persons from the Ellis Island website. His mother’s death certificate states conflicting data. The maiden name of his mother is still not known.

Ann Moro is new to genealogy and has a lot to learn. We gave her some good tips on locating her ancestors and how to get started.

Rose Marie Ducato discussed the 1930 census and handed out some forms for search strategies for the census. She also brought the Southern Soundex code for the Louisiana census. Her mother and grandparents are in the census. It is too bad that all the states are not soundexed. How simple and easy it would be if all the states were soundexed.  Our PIP group collected monies to be sent for the POINT National Convention in October

Geneva Shay did a fabulous presentation on Cemetery records. She not only brought a detailed description of how to find the dates that our ancestors died but to calculate the Year, month and day on which they were born.

She discussed in detail how to locate the death records. Where the websites are that can help you locate the cemeteries in your city or towns.  She also discussed in detail how to collect the data at the cemetery and what tools to bring with you in your hunt for ancestors. We all joined in with a lively discussion about our cemetery experiences.

Our next meeting is on September 14th, Saturday, 2pm-4pm, Schaumburg District Library, 130 S. Roselle Road.
