In order to know who your ancestors were you must start withyourself, from the present to the past, building a solid case based on primaryand excellent secondary sources.
Family legends or traditions are wonderful tools, but not facts. If your family story says your great great grandmother born in 1850 was a Cherokee Princess who walked the Trail of Tears; then you must decide if you want to believe your family story ... or the thousands of history books that say the "Trail" took place more than 10 years before her birth (1838/1839) and that there were no princesses in the Cherokee Tribe. Lets get started.
