Microfilm
pertaining to the Cherokee Tribe

There are many places to look for Native American Ancestors. The best places are in your own home, talking to the elderly, friends of the family, and your parents. If and when that fails, there are other places to look. Listed below are a few of the tools, list of microfilms available, that I use. In working with Native American Roots, one must remember that not all were listed on the rolls, many avoided this. The United States Government, and the Tribes themselves kept these rolls.

There are Branches of the National Archives that have custody of these Records, which were created, by field offices of The Bureau of Indian Affairs. The Bureau relates to more than 60 Indian Tribes, which were relocated from various parts of the United States into the area, which is now Oklahoma. The records and rolls are primarily relating to matters and management of Tribal and individual resources. And may contain information about persons who were recognized by the Federal Government as a member of a tribe and who maintained some formal affiliation with that tribe. Many persons with some degree of Indian Blood are not mentioned in any of these records because they were not officially recognized as a tribal member or they severed their tribal connections by moving away from the bulk of their tribe. Here are a few of the places you can send for information. To find out about Certificates of Degree of Indian Blood, eligibility for benefits based on Indian ancestry or the status of allotted land, write to:

For brief histories of Tribes, which were removed to Oklahoma:

"A Guide to the Indian Tribes of Oklahoma" by Muriel H Wright.

"A Guide to Records in the National Archives Relating to American Indians" - can be purchased from the Superintendent of Documents, U.S. Government Printing Office, Washington DC 20402.

Microfilm

It is my understanding that those microfilm beginning with a “M” or “T” can be purchased through the National Archives Publication Sales Branch (NEPS), Washington DC 20408. And those that begin with “7RA” purchased through contact with: Director, National Archives – Fort Worth Branch P.O. Box 6216, Fort Worth Texas 76115. You will have to contact them as to the cost of these microfilms.

The Microfilm is also available through interlibrary loan, sometimes for a minor fee, in most libraries. The LDS also has them and they can be sent to any LDS Family Center for a minor fee. Also many libraries already have these in their collections, so be sure to check with your local library.

Below you will find a list of what microfilm is available for the Cherokee, in several cases an explanation as to what the film will cover, and the different roll numbers included in each series of film.

The Microfilmed Records listed below is a list on the Cherokee only. List of microfilm was obtained through the National Archives.

This is not a complete list of microfilm that is available on the Cherokee. But helpful in finding the correct rolls that you might need.

M-1186
Enrollment Cards of the Five Civilized Tribes, 1898-1914. Rolls 1-93. Dawes Commission. (Some of the card numbers for the Choctaw and Chickasaw Rolls are illegible on this set of microfilm. The Oklahoma Historical Society has a set of microfilm with legible card numbers. To find applications, see M-1301 and locate “Field No: ___” in upper right-hand corner of the census card. Find the corresponding number in M-1301 to see which reel number the application is on.

This microfilm publication reproduces the enrollment cards prepared by the staff of the Commission to the Five Civilized Tribes (Cherokee, Chickasaw, Choctaw, Creek, and Seminole) between 1898 and 1914. These records are part of the Records of the Office of Indian Affairs, Record Group 75, and are housed in the Archives Branch of the Federal Archives and Records Center, Fort Worth, Texas.

The Commission enrolled individuals as “citizens” of a tribe under the following categories: Citizens by Blood, Citizens by Marriage, New Born Citizens by Blood (enrolled under an act of Congress approved March 3, 1905, 33 Stat. 1071), Minor Citizens by Blood (enrolled under an act of Congress approved April 26, 1906, 34 Stat. 137), Freedmen (former black slaves of Indians, later freed and admitted to tribal citizenship), New Born Freedmen, and Minor Freedmen. Delaware Indians adopted by the Cherokee tribe were enrolled as a separate group within the Cherokee. Within each enrollment category, the Commission generally maintained three types of cards: “Straight” cards for persons whose applications were approved, “D” cards for persons whose applications were considered doubtful and subject to question, and “R” cards for persons whose applications were rejected. Persons listed on “D” cards were subsequently transferred to either “Straight” or “R” cards depending on the Commission’s decisions. All decisions of the Commission were sent to the Secretary of the Interior for final approval.

An enrollment card, sometimes referred to by the Commission as a “census card,” records the information provided by individual applications submitted by members of the same family group or household and includes notation of the actions taken. The information given for each applicant includes name, roll number (individual’s number if enrolled), age, sex, degree of Indian blood, relationship to the head of the family group, parents’ names, and references to enrollment on earlier rolls used by the Commission for verification of eligibility. The card often includes references to kin-related enrollment cards and notations about births, deaths, changes in marital status, and actions taken by the Commission and the Secretary of the Interior. Within each enrollment category, the cards are arranged numerically by a “field” or “census card” number, which is separate from the roll number. The index to the final rolls, which is reproduced on roll 1 of this publication, provides the roll number for each person, while the final rolls themselves provide the census card numbers for each enrollee. No indexes have been located for the majority of the “D” and “R” cards. There are a few Mississippi Choctaw “Identified” and “Field Cards” as well as some Chickasaw “Cancelled” that refer to persons never finally enrolled.

This microfilm publication reproduces the application forms filled out by persons seeking to claim official enrollment in the Five Civilized Tribes, under the Dawes Commission. The applications contain additional information not abstracted to the census cards filmed in M1186. The applications are grouped first according to tribe, and relationships such as “by blood” or “minor,” and finally numerical order. *Note: To find application, first locate “Field No:” in upper right hand corner of census card on M1186. Find the corresponding number in M1301 to see which reel number the application is on. 468 rolls.
