The books on this list are aimed at adults, unless otherwise noted. Some of these books may be available in your local public library, or in your school or college library. Your local public library may be able to get books for you through interlibrary loan or similar programs. Those books that are in print (most are) may be purchased through bookstores, or ordered directly from the publishers.

The Southern Indians: The Story of the Civilized Tribes Before Removal, Cotterill, R.S. 1954, University of Oklahoma Press, Norman. Tells the story of several major Southeastern peoples during the fifty years preceding their removal to Oklahoma.

And Still the Waters Run: The Betrayal of the Five Civilized Tribes, Debo, Angie,  1940, University of Oklahoma Press, Norman. Describes the liquidation of the independent republics of the Choctaw, Chickasaw, Cherokee, Creek, and Seminole peoples.

Trail of Tears: The Rise & Fall of the Cherokee Nation, Ehle, John,  1988, Doubleday, New York. An account of the removal of the Cherokee people to Oklahoma.

The Texas Cherokees: A People Between Two Fires, 1819-1840, Everett, Dianna,  1990, University of Oklahoma Press, Norman. Focuses on social and political organization and belief system, and on their adaptation to the Texas environment.

Cherokee Americans: The Eastern Band of Cherokees in the Twentieth Century,
Finger, John R.,  1991, University of Nebraska Press, Lincoln. History of the Eastern Cherokees in the present century.

The Five Civilized Tribes, Foreman, Grant, 1934, University of Oklahoma Press, Norman. Post-removal history of the Cherokee, Chickasaw, Choctaw, Creek, and Seminole peoples.

Indian Removal, Foreman, Grant,  1932, University of Oklahoma Press, Norman. The dispossession, in the 1840's, of the five major Southeastern tribes.

Sequoyah, Forman, Grant,  1938, University of Oklahoma Press, Norman. Biography of Sequoyah.

Beginning Cherokee, Holmes, Ruth Bradley, & Betty Sharp Smith, 1976, University of Oklahoma Press, Norman. A beginning text in the Oklahoma dialect of the Cherokee language.

The Southeastern Indians, Hudson, Charles,  1976, University of Tennessee Press, Knoxville. Culture, society, prehistory, and history of the native peoples of the Southeast.

The Cherokee Indian Nation: A Troubled History, King, Duane H. (editor),  1979, University of Tennessee Press, Knoxville. Includes essays by twelve contributors on various aspects of Cherokee history.

Mankiller: A Chief & Her People, Mankiller, Wilma, & Michael Wallis,  1993, St. Martin's Press, New York. Autobiography by the contemporary Cherokee leader, Wilma Mankiller.

After the Trail of Tears, McLoughlin, William G.,  1993, University of North Carolina Press, Chapel Hill. Cherokees' struggle for sovereignty, 1839-1880.

Myths of the Cherokee and Sacred Formulas of the Cherokee, Mooney, James,  (bound together), reprint of material first published in the 7th and 19th Annual Reports of the Bureau of American Ethnology. Reprinted 1982 by Charles & Randy Elder, Booksellers, Nashville, TN. Detailed, scholarly studies of Cherokee beliefs.

Snowbird Cherokees: People of Persistence, Neely, Sharlotte,  1991, University of Georgia Press, Athens. Study of a Cherokee community in North Carolina.

The Cherokee, Perdue, Theda,  1989, Chelsea House Publishers, Philadelphia. A volume in the series Indians of North America, edited by Frank W. Porter III. A well-illustrated general survey of Cherokee history and culture, aimed at junior/senior high school students, but also useful for adult readers.

Slavery & the Evolution of Cherokee Society, Perdue, Theda,  1540-1866, 1979, University of Tennessee Press, Knoxville. A study of slavery and its impact on Cherokee society.

Cherokee Dance & Drama, Speck, Frank G., & Leonard Bloom, with Will West Long,  1951, University of Oklahoma Press, Norman. Discussion of Cherokee dances and ceremonies.

The Indians of the Southeastern United States, Swanton, John R.,  1946, reprinted 1979, Smithsonian Institution Press, Washington. A detailed, scholarly study, reprinted as a volume in the Classics of Smithsonian Anthropology series.
