BIOGRAPHY

Charles' father is unknown at this time. Torrence's "VA Wills and
Administrations" (copy on file in letter from Sally Dolphin, dated 30
March, 1994) lists only one Carter will in Chesterfield Co. - 1795 for
Armstead Carter. Charles' son Thomas named one of his sons Armstead.
The book lists several Carter wills for Essex Co.. Also, an Elizabeth
Salter died leaving a will dated 23 December, 1771. She named "my
four children: William Carter, Mary Timmerman, Charles Carter, and
Juda Carter, daughter Sarah Jinnings." Could she be Charles' mother??
According to the DAR application of Frances Helm Bennett (copy on
file), Charles was born in 1757 in Essex Co., VA, served as a Private
in Virginia, received a pension for his service, and died sometime
between 29 October, 1838 (the date of his will, copy on file) and
August 28, 1839, the date his will was recorded (from Will book "C",
page 401 Cumberland Co., KY Court Records (No copy on file)).
On February 7, 1777, in Essex Co., VA, Charles enlisted as a private
in the Second Regiment of the Virginia State Troops, under the command
of Company Captain Henry Garnet in a regiment commanded by Colonel
William Brent. The regiment joined General Washington's ragged and
underfed army at Valley Forge and were trained by Baron Frederick von
Steuben. Soldiers were paid $6 2/3 plus 10$ subsistence per month at
that time.
Charles' regiment served in the Command of Major Henry (Lighthorse
Harry) Lee (father of Robert E. Lee), and participated in the Battle
of Monmouth Court House (New Jersey). The revolutionaries were routed
and fell into a disorderly retreat. General Washington is said to
have exploded into a rage upon seeing the retreat and rallied the men
into another charge which resulted in victory.
The regiment was held in reserve when Stony Point was captured by
General Anthony Wayne. He "participated in the capture of a small
British Fort called Powle's Hook or Paulus's Hook" (across the Hudson
from New York City). The troops got their powder wet crossing a swamp
to get to the fort and could not fire their muskets, but they managed
to capture the fort and 64 prisoners anyway. The prisoners were
marched to Philadelphia. From there, the command was ordered to
Fredricksburg, VA, where Charles was discharged by General Lee in
February, 1780. (Pension application, Book D., Volume 8, page 34,
National Archives, Washington D.C., copy on file).
In his pension application, he stated that he was "raised in Essex
Co., VA" and moved to Chesterfield Co., VA in 1782. Around that time,
he married Catherine Evans(?). This is proven by Vital Statistics of
Kentucky (no copy on file) recording of the death of Elizabeth Carter
on 13 September, 1856. This document lists the parents of Elizabeth
Carter.
In 1788, Charles was listed as insolvent, owing one pound, 4
shillings revenue tax for three horses.
Charles was granted 100 acres of land in Cumberland Co., KY for his
Revolutionary War service. He and Catherine moved there in 1810,
apparently following their two sons, Samuel and James (both appear in
the 1810 census, no copy on file).
Charles is first found in the 1820 Cumberland Co., KY census. The
household had one male over 45 years of age (Charles), one female over
45 years of age (his wife, Catherine), two females age 26 to 45 (most
likely his daughters, Polly and Elizabeth), and one male under 10
years old. He lived next to his sons Samuel and Thomas, and near his
son Josiah.
Charles lived "North of the river" according to the 1830 Cumberland
Co., KY census. He is listed as age 70 to 80, with two females age 70
to 80 (his wife Catherine, and who else? Mrs. John Farmer, mother of
Charles' son James' wife Phoebe Farmer?), two females age 30 to 40
(again, most likely his daughters, Polly and Elizabeth), one female
age 10 to 15, (Phoebe Susan Carter, daughter of Charles' son James M.
Carter?) and one male age 5 to 10 (James Madison Carter, son of
James?).
On 4 March, 1831, Charles began receiving a pension of 80$ per month
for his Revolutionary War service.
Need to get a copy of the History of Essex Co., VA, it supposedly
mentions some Carters, but gives no genealogical info.
Charles estate was settled on 11 December, 1844 (Cumberland Co., KY.,
Will book D, page 311). A previous settlement was filed on 4
september, 1841 (no copy on file).

BIOGRAPHY

Samuel owned 95 acres of land in the same tax district as John Farmer
(father-in-law of Samuel's brother, James) in 1804. He took up a land
grant in on Marrowbone Creek in Cumberland Co., KY on 20 August, 1805
(no copy on file).
Samuel was married in Cumberland Co., KY on 27 February, 1807. I am
unsure of his wife's name. A letter from Nancy Buell dated 11
November, 1989 states that her name was Phoebe Farmer, but this is
unlikely since she married Samuel's brother James in 1803. Bill
Carter's letter of 21 March, 1992 states that the wife's name was Mary
Williams, but he does not know where that came from.
Samuel and his brother James signed as charter members of the Salem
Baptist Church on Rennich Creek on 9 July, 1808. According to Wells
History of Cumberland Co., KY (page 64), there were 13 charter members
(no copy on file).
Samuel had several children:
Polly Wadkins, born 27 April, 1807;
Green, born 11 December, 1808;
Evans Carter, born 1 June 1810;
Joseph, born 31 December, 1811;
Robert Alson, born 17 October, 1815;
James Hill, born 17 September, 1818;
and David, born 17 December, 1820, in Cumberland Co., KY, married
Elizabeth Myers on 4 May, 1841, became a doctor and moved to
Plainfield, Indiana, helped to found the town of Epsom, and died 26
January, 1872 in Davies Co., IN, buried in Chapel Cemetery, near
Epsom. More information on the descendants is contained in the Carter
file.
