county seat.  Clerk of the circuit court has marriage, divorce, civil ct,
& land records from 1851; Registrar of wills has probate records.

I was primarily interested in Baltimore County in the time prior to 1770,
therefore most of the records in this document are in that period. jec

Lay out for WILLIAM CANE fifty acres of land due to him for serving his
full time and fifty acres more due to him by assignment from Thomas Popey
in any part of this province not formerly taken up nor reserved for his
Lordship's use, and returne your Certificate of Survey with the names of
the place and of what County allyth, by the twenty fourth day of June
next and this shall be your warrant.  Given under my hand this ??th day

of October, one thousand six hundred sixty eight, came and desired the
above said warrant for one hundred acres of land bearing date as
aforesaid might be renewed.

This indenture made the 21st day of July in the year of our Lord God one
thousand six-hundred eighty six and in the 11th year of the Dominion of
the right Honorable Charles, Absolute Lord and Propery of the Province of
Maryland and _______ Lord Baron of Baltimore, between Thomas Richardson
of Gunpowder River on the one part and WILLIAM CAINE of Back River and
both of Baltimore County on the other part.  Wittnefsth that he the said
Thomas Richardson for & in consideration of the sum of two thousand
pounds of tobacco to him in hand already paid or secured to be paid
before the insealing and delivery hereof by him the said WILLIAM CAINE
wherewith and whereof and of every part & parcel thereof the said Thomas
Richardson doth hereby acknowledge himself fully satisfied, contented and
paid and therewith and thereof and of every part and parcel thereof.  I
do clearly bequeath and discharge the said WILLIAM CAINE firmly by these
presents hath given, granted, bargained,____ and aliened and doth by
these presents bargain, sell, grant, and alien fully and absolutely unto
the said WILLIAM CAINE, his heirs, exers or assigns all that tract of
land called Richardson's Plain lying and being situate on the south side
of a branch Gunpowder River commonly called Back River.  Beginning at a
bounded White Oake on a level(?) _____ the said branch and running up the
branch west thirty perches to a bounded red oake on the aforesaid
level(?) peere(?) the said & _____ then running into the woods south five
hundred thirty four perches parallel with a parcell of land belonging to
Richard Windley then running east thirty perches respecting to the east
the land called Springhook then by a direct line to the first mentioned
bound containing one hundred acres of land together with all rights,
con______ and appurtenances thereunto belonging His Royal Minon(?)
excepted.  To have and to hold the said tract of land and all and
singular premisfes before by these presents ___________ or extended to __
granted with all and singular their appurtenances to the said WILLIAM
CAINE his heirs or assigns forever and the said Thomas Richardson doth
for himself, his heirs, exers, and admrs Covenant(?) and grant to and
with the said WILLIAM CAINE & his heirs and assigns and every of them by
these presents in manner & form following:  That is to _____ the said
Tho.  Richardson for and not withstanding any act or thing by ____ or
_____ means or procurement(?) of covenant or privity had made, committed
or done or willingly or willfully subjected to C_____ to the contrary now
at the ensealing and delivery hereof ___ doth and is rightfully and
really seized and until the estate hereby granted shall be subsequently
____ vested and setled in and upon the said WILLIAM CAINE, his heirs and
assigns and ___ ____ remaine of all the said premises _____ of a good
absolute and perfect estate to him and his heirs forever in his own right
and to his own use without any manner of lot condition, revertion,
remainder or limitation of any use or uses estate or estates to any
person or persons whatsoever to to alter, change, defeat, determine or
make void the same.  And the said Thomas Richardson at the time of the
ensealing and delivery of these presents hath full power, ____, right &
has full authority to grant, bargain, sell, convey, and alien the same
with all the hereby mentioned & intended to be granted for _______ with
their __________ unto the said WILLIAM CAINE, his heirs and assigns
forever in manner and form afsd.  And that the said WILLIAM CAINE, his
heirs and assigns and every of them shall and may by force and _______
hereof from time to time and at all times hereafter peacefully and
quietly have, hold and occupy, etc, etc, and _____ all and every of the
aforesaid bargained premises with their appurtenances to his and their
own proper use and Coh____ without any lot, suit, molestation, or charge
whatsoever of or by the said Thomas Richardson, his heirs or assigns or
any of them or any other person or persons whatsoever lawfully claiming
by right, title or ________ unto the said bargained premises or by any
part or parcel thereof and that free and clear ______ and clearly
bequitted and discharged or otherwise from time to time will and
sufficiently saved and kept harmless by the said by the said Thomas
Richardson of and from all manner of gifts, grants, bargains, sales,
leases, mortgages or indentures, extended judgements, executions,
forfeitures, fines, _____, amorionments of and from all and singular
other titles, troubles, charges, demands and incumberances whatsoever had
made, committed, or done by this said Thomas Richardson for his heirs or
assigns or any other person or persons whatsoever lawfully claiming any
right or interest unto the said bargained premises or any part or parcel
thereof the rents and services from henceforth to grow due to the Lord or
Lords of the fee or fees only excepted and for_____zed and that said
Thomas Richardson for himself, his heirs and exers doth covenant, agree
to and with the said WILLIAM CAINE his heirs and assigns and every one of
them.  That the said Thomas Richardson shall and will the said tract of
land and all and singular the premises unto the said WILLIAM CAINE his
heirs & assigns against all persons whatsoever  lawfully claiming any
right title or interest unto the said bargained premises warrant and
defend by these presents and the said Thomas Richardson his heirs and all
other persons lawfully claiming or which may hereafter lawfully claim any
right, title or interest into or out of the premises from by or _____ or
him the said Thomas Richardson or his heirs or assigns shall and will
from time to time and at all times hereafter during the space of seven
years _____ ensuing the date hereof at the reasonable request, cost and
charges in the law of the said WILLIAM CAINE do make, levy, execute,

This indenture made this eighteenth day of August in fifth year of
Dominion of the right honorable Frederick, absolute Lord and proprietary
of the province of Maryland Avalon Lord Barron of Baltimore and in the
year of our Lord God one thousand seven hundred and fifty and five
between JOHN CAIN, son of WM. CANE late of Baltimore County of the one
part and John More of Baltimore Town in the County of Baltimore in the
province of Maryland of the other part.  Witnefseth that for and in
consideration of the sum of fifty pounds current money of Maryland to him
the said JOHN CAIN in hand paid by the aforesaid John More before the
sealing and delivery of these presents the receipt whereof the said JOHN
CAIN do hereby acknowledge and thereof do acquit, release, and discharge
the said John More, his heirs, Exer. and adm forever by these presents he
the said JOHN CAIN hath granted, bargained, and sold alien, released and
confirmed and by these presents doth grant, bargain, and sell, alien,
release and confirm unto the said John More, his heir and afsigns forever
all the estate, right, title, interest, claim, property and demand
whatsoever which he the said JOHN CAIN hath unto a tract or parcell of
land lying and being in Baltimore County and upon the south side Gun
Powder River and upon the south side of a branch of the said river
commonly called Back River.  Beginning at a bounded white oake on a swill
near the afsd branch then running up the branch west thirty perches to a
bounded red oak on the aforesaid levill near the said branch, then
running into the woods south five hundred thirty four perches parraliel
with a parcell of land belonging to Richd Vinley of the aforesaid county,
planter then running east thirty perches respecting (?) to the east by
land called Spring Neck then running with a direct line to the first
bounder containing one hundred acres more or lefs.  Surveyed in the year
sixteen hundred and eighty three for Thomas Richardson and called by the
name Richardson's Plain together with all houses, orchards and
improvements whatsoever.  To have and to hold the aforesaid parcell of
land with the rights, members, and appurtenances unto the said John More,
his heirs and afsigns forever and the said JOHN CAIN for himself and his
heirs and afsigns doth covenant, promise, grant, & agree that he the said
JOHN CAIN for himself and his heirs, Exrs, Admrs, the aforesaid granted
and bargained premifses with the rights, members and appurtenances
against himself, his heirs and afsigns and all other persons lawfully
claiming or who hereafter may lawfull claim the same or any part thereof
by from or under him or any of them respectively unto the said John More,
his heirs or afsigns shall and will warrant and forever defend by these
presents.  In Witnefs whereof the aforesaid JOHN CAIN to this indenture
his hand hath set and seal affixed the day and year first within written.

WILLIAM CAINE to Abraham Jarrett.  This indenture made this twenty fifth
day of November seventeen hundred and sixty six Between WILLIAM CAINE of
Baltimore County in the Province of Maryland of the one part and Abraham
Jarrett of the county and province aforesaid of the other part.  Whereas
the Honourable Edward Lloyd(?) Esq. his Lordships Agent and Receiver
General of and for the said province by indenture of lease dated the
twenty fifth day of April, 1760-
Between him the said Edward LLoyd for and on behalf of his Lordship the
Lord Proprietor of the one part and the aforesaid WILLIAM CAINE of the
other part he the said Edward Lloyd Esq. for the consideration therein
mentioned did demise let and to farm let unto the said WILLIAM CAINE his
Executor and Administrator and assigns all that tract or parcel of land
called CAINE'S Chance containing thirty acres being part of the lands
reserved in said county for his Lordship's use to be had and holden unto
him the said WILLIAM CAINE his executors, admr. and assigns from the
aforesaid twenty fifth day of April 1760 for and during the term of
ninety nine years then next to come under sundry covenants, restrictions
and proviso as in and by the aforesaid Indenture of Lease may more fully
appear.  Now this Indenture witnefseth that the said WILLIAM CAINE for
and in consideration of the sum of ten pounds current money to him in
hand paid, the receipt of which is hereby acknowledged hath and by these
presence doth grant, bargain, sell, afsign and set over unto him the said
Abraham Jarrett, his executors, admrs, and assigns all the aforesaid
tract of land and premises with it's appurtenances unto him the said
Abraham Jarrett, his executors, admnrs, and afsigns to have and to hold
the aforesaid tract of land and premises unto him the said Abraham
Jarrett his Executors, admr, afsigns for and during all the residue of
the term of ninety nine years which is yet to come against all manner of
Persons whatsoever .  In witenfs whereof I have set my hand and seal the

Sep 1755.  September Court.   Citation ifsued   Order to the sheriff of
Baltimore County against HUGH CAIN to shew cause why he doth not take out
letters of administration on the Estate of JOHN CAIN, Father of the said
HUGH CAIN returnable to this court.  The sheriff of Baltimore County
aforesaid to whom the same was directed makes no return thereof.
Whereupon it is ordered that Attachment ifsue to the Coroner of Baltimore
County against the Sheriff of that county for his contempt in neglecting
to return the precept aforesaid.

28 Jan 1764.  January Court.  Citation issued returnable to March Court
to the sheriff of Baltimore County against HUGH CAIN to show cause why he
refuses to take Letters of Administration on his father JOHN CAIN'S
Estate.

March 1764.  March Court.  Citation having been ifsued returnable to the
sheriff of Baltimore County against HUGH CAIN to show cause why he does
not take Letters of Administration on his father JOHN CAIN'S Estate.  The
sheriff to whom this procefs aforesaid was directed makes his return
thereof endorsed NE.  Whereupon the said HUGH CAIN does not appear
therefore the procefs aforesaid is ordered to be renewed returnable to
next court.

May Court 1764.  Citation renewed against HUGH CAIN which formerly ifsued
to the sheriff of Baltimore County to shew cause why he does not take
Letters of Administration on his father JOHN CAIN'S Estate.  The sheriff
to whom the procefs aforesaid was directed makes no return thereof.
Whereupon it is ordered that the citation afsd. be renewed to next court
and that attachment ifsue to the Coroner of Baltimore County against
Aquila Hall Esq. Sheriff for his contempt in not serving and making due
return of the above Citation.

July Court 1764.  Citation having been renewed to this Court against HUGH
CAIN to shew cause why he does not take Letters of Admin on the Estate of
his father, JOHN CAIN late deceased.  The sheriff to whom the precefs
aforesaid was directed makes his return thereof Endorsed furninone(?).
Whereupon he appears and Lodges his affidavit that the aforesaid deceased
left no effects.  Whereupon it is ordered that the procefs afsd. be
struck off.

05 Sep 1769.  A just inventory of the goods and chattels, rights and
credits of Thomas Gibson lately deceased of Balt. County appraised by
John Hughes & Daniel Tradway.

Came JOHN CAIN & CATHERINE his wife, adm. of Thomas Gibson late of
Baltimore County deceased and made oath on the Evangelist of Almighty God
that the foregoing is a just and perfect inventory of all and singular
the goods and chattels _________ of the decd. that were come to their
hands & pofsefsion or knowledge and that what hath since or shall
hereafter come to their hands or pofsefsion they will return in an
additional inventory that they know of no concealment by any person
whatsoever and if they shall hereafter discover any concealm or suspect
any to be that they will acquaint the Commifsa___ General for the time
being or his Deputy with such discovery or cause of suspicion that it may
be enquired into & that they will well and truly give an account of all &
every part of the deceased person's estate.   Sworn to before:

charge themselves with the amount of the deceased's inventory as will

Aug 20th 1770 Came JOHN CAIN and CATHERINE his wife adm of Thomas Gibson
late of Baltimore County deceased and made Oath on the Holy Evangelist of
Almighty God that the within and foregoing account is just and true which
after due examination is pafsed by virtue of a power from the
Prerogative's Office.

belonging to John Sterett & Co. Baltimore, and also to ALEXANDER CAIN,
Comdr. of the Schooner Dragon, 40 tons burthen, mounting 2 Carriage guns,
2 Swivels and 14 small arms belonging to Hugh Young & Com. Baltimore.

                         PENNSYLVANIA BORDER TROUBLES

The dispute with regard to the boundary line between Maryland and
Pennsylvania was the occasion not only of much bitter feeling, but of
actual collisions and conflicts between those living near or occupying
debatable ground.   .....
  ... In 1736, Governor Ogle directed Thomas White, deputy surveyor, to
lay out two hundred acres of land in the disputed territory of Baltimore
County, and lying on the west side of the Susquehanna, for each of the
following persons:  Henry Munday, Edward Leet, Charl. Higginbotham, JAMES
KAINE, John Smith, HUGH KAINE, James Nickleson, Robert Trotter, Robert
Rowland, William Miles, William Greenlee, Stephen White, John Cross, JOHN
KAINE,SR., JOHN KAINE, Edward Ryly, Patrick Savage, Arthur Browlee, James
Love, Anthony Dixson, Benjamin Dixson, John Morrow, Thomas King, Ralph
Higginbotham, John McNabb, James McGee, Barnibe Clarke, Thomas Moore,
Richard Ryan, George Bond, Thomas Linass, William Linass, John Linass,
John Coats, Robert Jesson, George Moore, Robert Moore, Gibbons Jennings,
Thomas Scarlet, William Carpenter, Richard Pope, Thomas Charlton, John
Charlton,Sr., Edward Charlton, John Charlton, Thomas Charlton, Jr.,
