Well, here we are, at one of the few Web sites that deals solely with the Channel Islands and attempts to focus on Channel Islands genealogy. I enjoy helping those who are seeking their Channel Islands roots and hope that something on these pages will be of assistance to you. CHANNEL ISLANDS MAILING LIST

Before we get started, please note that there is now a genealogy mailing list devoted specifically to those who are researching their Channel Islands ancestry. A brief description of this list, including posting and subscribing instructions, follows:

CHANNEL-ISLANDS. A mailing list for anyone with a genealogical interest in the Channel Islands (Jersey and the Bailiwick of Guernsey) which lie off the Normandy coast of France. Mailing address for postings is channel-islands-l@rootsweb.com. To subscribe send the word "subscribe" (without the quotes) as the only text in the body of a message to channel-islands-l-request@rootsweb.com (mail mode) or channel-islands-d-request@rootsweb.com (digest mode).

CHANNEL ISLANDS SURNAME INTERESTS LIST

Over the past few years I have compiled an extensive list of Internet contacts and the Channel Islands surnames they are researching. This list is available on a set of alphabetical web pages. I also maintain the list as a text file (surnames.txt) if you desire to download the entire list for future reference.

VOLUNTEERS/LOOKUPS

Many of our friends have research material related to the Channel Islands and have offered to look up information that might assist others in their research efforts. A list of these volunteers and the material that is available to them can be found in the Volunteers List.

Index to 1849 Map of Jersey

A 55 x 40 inch "Map of The Island of Jersey" was produced in 1849 by Hugh Godfray showing basic "culture" including houses and their Proprietors. A cartographic grid was overlain on this map in order to index the habitations. With additional reference to selected locations from the published work of Joan Stevens "Old Jersey Houses", which lists many of the houses shown on the map, Roland de Caen has created an index showing some 2,000 names of House Proprietors. The Index Introduction which has links to each of the Parish pages. Please note that the index is far from a complete reference and should form a supplementary source to the study of the 1851 Census.

Channel Islands Family History Society
The official website of the Channel Islands Family History Society. The objects of the Society are the study of the history and genealogy of Channel Islands families, the exchange of information on them and on other families who have connections with the islands.

Alex Glendinning's Home Page
A must for those who are researching their Channel Islands roots. Alex is the Vice-Chairman of the Channel Islands Family History Society (CIFHS) and his Home Page contains a wealth of information on the Society including general information, the index of contents for recent Journals, and a list of upcoming events. He has also included Research in the Channel Islands FAQs (Frequently Asked Questions) and descriptions of his very informative books on the Islands. Alex plans frequent updates to his Home Page so stop by when you get a chance.

This page provides a wealth of genealogy-related information on the British Isles, including a section for the Channel Islands.

1841 Channel Islands Census
Lorna Pratt provides transcribed information from the 1841 census returns for the Channel Islands.

Jersey and my family history
James Brannan provides a discussion of his Renouf, Dupre, Hue and Le Hardy ancestors and his research in Jersey, including useful insights regarding the use of various primary sources for genealogical records.

du Feu Family Home Page
Philip and Jacquelyn (nee du Feu) and Trevor du Feu provide information on the Trinity and St. Ouen du Feu lines from 1590 to the present.

The Le Gros Family Of St. Lawrence
Chris Le Gros provides descendent lists and birth, marriage, and death information on the two Le Gros families that originated in the Jersey parish of St. Lawrence.

PafWeb - WWW Genealogy
This site uses a new Internet genealogy program, PafWeb, written by Ray and Thomas Messervy, and includes an extensive list of individuals in the Meservy family with the associated Pedigree Charts. The Meservy family provided at this site comes from Jersey during the mid-1800s and extends back into the 1200s with several family branches. If you have Meservy/Messervy ancestry, you should stop in and check for links.

Genealogy of the Messervy Family
Fred Meserve provides a variety of information on the Meserve families in the United States who are descended from Clement Meserve. Clement was born on Jersey in 1645 and immigrated to the United States around 1670.

Genealogy of Stephane Luce
Stephane Luce provides a biography of his great-grandfather Phillippe Luce (1826-1892) who was born on Jersey and emigrated to Canada in 1861.

LUCE Genealogy : JERSEY : Channel Islands
Victor Luce describes his Luce ancestry including the descendants of Philippe Luce (1826-1892), the son of Elie Luce and Elizabeth Sorsoleil, who emigrated to Canada in 1861.

Poindexter Descendants Association
A site devoted to the American descendants of George Poingdestre who arrived in the Colony of Virginia from Jersey in 1657.

Genealogy of Le Blancq family from Jersey Island
Guy Le Blancq provides information on his Le Blancq family from Jersey.

The Vibert Family
Trevor Vibert provides information on the main branches of the Vibert family and all it's derivatives, especially those in Canada and the United States, and a brief history of Jersey.

The Priaulx Library
The Priaulx Library, located in Candie, St Peter Port, Guernsey, has extensive resources/records for Guernsey including historical publications, family trees and published family histories, Parish Church Registers, Constables Records of St Peter Port, almanacs from the 19th century, newspapers from 1791, Societe Guernsiaise publications, photographic collection, Greff records, church and parish records, cemetery records, civil registers, and census records.

The Bailiwick of Guernsey Genealogy Interest Site
Peter Guilbert provides a wealth of information related to Guernsey genealogy ... an excellent starting point for Guernsey researchers.

Renouf Family Genealogy
Jacky Renouf provides a history of the Renouf families from Guernsey as well as a number of family trees based on parish records, census data and migrations of the Guernsey Renoufs.

Falla Family Home Page
John Falla provides a number of pages related to Guernsey genealogy including a Descendant Report of Fallas from Gyfre Falla (the earliest known Falla on Guernsey) to the present and a report called People of Guernsey which currently includes over 25,000 entries.

Jersey Web - Home Page
This page is an excellent source of general information on Jersey. You can access various subject areas from this Home Page though you might want to go directly to the A-Z Guide and browse through the alphabetical list of topics.

The Jersey Society in London
This page, maintained by Brian Read, is the official web page of The Jersey Society in London which was established in 1896 by a group of Jersey people who had left the island of their birth to live and work in London. The object of the Society is to stimulate interest in Jersey, especially the island's history and progress.

Knowhere Guide to Jersey
Lots of categories for Jersey information (e.g., shops, food, pubs, clubs); however, there are little or no details at this time. This page has great prospects as people add additional information. You might want to pop in now and then to see if new information has been added.

A Brief History Of Policing In Jersey
Part of the States of Jersey Police web pages, this page provides an excellent discussion of law enforcement in Jersey. I found it quite interesting as part of the historical perspective on the lives of our ancestors. In addition, there are links to a glossary of terms that might be useful (I always wondered what a Jurat was, since this was the occupation of many of my ancestors, and now I know).
