GenWebという言葉は二つの言葉の組み合わせから作られたものです。「Genealogy（系図学）」という言葉の最初の三つの文字と「web」という言葉が組み合わせられました。この場合、「Web」という言葉は、同じ話題を扱っていてリンクされているインターネット上の様々なページのことを意味しています。人々がインターネット上の様々な所で系図情報を調べるかもしれませんが、これらのページはすべて系図学と関係があり、ボランティアによって行われているので、このボランティアプロジェトはGenWebとして知られるようになりました。 1996年の3月と4月にアメリカ合衆国において、ある系図学者のグループが｢ケンタッキー州の包括的な系図データベース｣を作成しました。この包括的な系図データベース作成の目的は、ケンタッキー州のすべての郡の系図について集められた情報を貯えたり検索するためのエントリーポイントを用意することでした。さらに、そのデータベースには索引がつけられ、リンクされるようになっており、ある人が二つ以上の郡に出てきたとしても、索引の中に位置づけることが可能になります。同時に、集められたデータベースの統合やウェブページの内容の管理をすすんで行おうとするボランティアの人たちも見つけることができました。 1996年6月に、ケンタッキー州の包括的な系図データベースプロジェクトが完了しようとしていた時に、USGenWeb Project｢アメリカ合衆国の系図データベースプロジェクト｣が組織されました。今、各州のページのため、郡のページのコレクションをすすんで統合してくれるボランティアが現れているところです。 1996年6月、USGenWeb Project ｢アメリカ合衆国の系図データベースプロジェクト｣が始った約2週間後にWorldGenWeb Project「世界系図データベースプロジェクト」が始まりました。 まだ沢山の国々のGenWebページやアメリカ合衆国の州や郡では、ボランティアが必要です。日本以外のどこかの国についてのWorldGenWebページを整理することをお手伝いいただける場合には、WorldGenWeb Boardにご連絡下さい。 日本においてもこのような県や市町村のボランティアが必要です。もしボランティアする興味がありましたら、是非次のページをご覧下さい。ボレンティアに興味がなくても、是非日本GenWebページを見ていただきたいです。どこか他の国であなたの名字と同じ人が情報を探しているかも知れません。また、もしも質問がありましたら、日本のGenWebコーディネーターシャーレット M. マイヤーさんにご連絡下さい。なお、現在マイヤーさんのコンピュータが日本語をサポートしていませんので、ローマ字による日本語を書いていただければ助かります。もしも漢字を使いたい場合には、このアドレスにメッセージを送って下さい。その情報をマイヤーさんにお伝えします。 上述の情報のいくつかは、レベッカ チャキさんが提供して下さったものです。チャキさんどうも有り難うございました！ 日本GenWebページのコーディネーターは、アイオワ州マクワケタ市のシャーレットM.マイヤーさんです。 このページの内容についての質問かコメント、またはリンクしない部分がありましたら、こちらへメッセージを送って下さい。 GenWeb is the combination of 2 words. The first 3 letters of genealogy have been combined with the word web. In this case the word web refers to a variety of pages on the Internet which deal with one common string or subject. Though people may search in a variety of places for genealogical information on the Internet, all of the GenWeb pages are related to genealogy and run by volunteers. This volunteer project has therefore become known as GenWeb. In March and April 1996, a group of genealogists organized the Kentucky Comprehensive Genealogy Database. The idea was to provide a single entry point for all counties in Kentucky, where collected databases would be stored. In addition, the databases would be indexed and cross-linked, so that even if an individual were found in more than one county, they could be located in the index. At the same time, volunteers were found who were willing to coordinate the collection of databases and generally oversee the contents of the web page. In June 1966, as the Kentucky Project was coming to completion, the USGenWeb project was organized. Volunteers are being found who are willing to coordinate the collection of county pages for each state page. Also in June 1996, just 2 weeks or so after the beginning of The US GenWeb project, the WorldGenWeb project was begun. (Volunteers are still needed for many of the countries. If you are interested in hosting a country, please contact the WorldGenWeb Board.) In Japan, prefectural, city, county, and village volunteers are also needed.
