The coordinator will divide up their prefecture into local regions or divisions and will make a host page which will list the regional pages within their prefecture. They will be the GenWeb coordinator for the prefecture. Should district coordinators have a question, they will be able to discuss it with the prefectural coordinator. District (Local) Volunteer Coordinators A coordinator is required for each district within the prefecture. The District Coordinator will make a GenWeb homepage which contains general and genealogical information about their district. At this point a prefectural representative is needed for every prefecture in Japan. The Contents of Japan GenWeb Pages Prefectural coordinators are requested to list the regions your prefecture has been divided into as well as information about major cities in your prefecture. You may also include any other information that you feel would help people who are searching for their roots in your prefecture. District coordinators are requested to create homepages for their area which would provide genealogical researchers with information to begin their search. Many genealogical researchers are interested in obtaining addresses of local city halls, Buddhist temples, or other places where they might locate information about their family history. Any place where they might locate information about their family history is worth including in the page. If you know any professional genealogists in your area, you might consider including their names. (Please remember however that the GenWeb project is not-for-profit.) If you find pages on the Internet about your area which you think are relevant, you may consider including them. A list of the major cities, counties, or villages in your area would also be very helpful to researchers. Though we request that Japan GenWeb pages be in English, we are of course always happy to have bilingual, Japanese and English, pages as well. If I make a GenWeb web page, where can I find free server space? The World GenWeb is sponsored by RootsWeb and they have kindly provided space for this and many other GenWeb pages for free. (Thank you to the folks at RootsWeb!) Charlotte, the Japan GenWeb page coordinator, can help you in applying for a free page with either RootsWeb or GeoCities. Both offer space for homepages at no cost. Ftp software is also necessary. Please contact Charlotte with any questions about page space or software. How much do we help? Looking up information for an individual researcher can be quite time consuming and sometimes costly. As volunteers you are NOT required to collect information. If you choose to help someone, that is your own prerogative however you are NOT responsible for or expected to look up information for individual researchers. The prefectural and area pages are created and maintained as sources from which researchers should be able to begin their own investigations. Additionally, you are not expected to translate from English to Japanese the queries which are posted to your prefecture. If you would like to do this, you may, however we understand it is a time consuming task and you are therefore NOT expected to translate the queries.
