Have you ever wondered why there are certain customs your parents insist on following even though they can't explain why or where the habit originated? While sitting with a grandparent have you ever thought that their hands have done work and their eyes had seen places that you may never even have imagined of? Or, if you haven't been so fortunate to have met your grandparents or relatives, have you ever wondered what they were like? Are there any relatives left in the place where your grandparents came from? What do they look like? Do they look like you? If you've ever had thoughts like these, you'll understand what the purpose of the Japan GenWeb page is. Japanese people have traveled the world. Some Japanese chose to establish homes and families in countries beyond Japan. Like emigrants from other countries, Japanese had to work hard in their new lands to survive. Though they were often faced with adversity, many of these Japanese successfully adjusted to life in their new countries and raised families. Though they were separated from their homeland, some of them told their children stories about cousins or relatives still living in Japan or about the island where they were born. Some Japanese expatriates were able to teach their children and grandchildren the Japanese language while others did not or could not. This page is for those people who live beyond these islands but who are searching for their roots in Japan. Hopefully it will offer direction to people of Japanese descent. Some visitors to these pages know a great deal about their family history. They know their grandparents' and great-grandparents' names, where they were from, and when they were born. Other people, however, have very little information about their family and aren't sure where or how they should begin the search for their roots in Japan. The purpose of this page is to offer, on a volunteer basis, some friendly direction and a little advice to anyone trying to locate genealogical information about their family history in Japan.
