Former Medicine Lodge Boy Is Missing In Action

A former Medicine Lodge boy, Cpl. John E. Metcalfe, son of Mr. and Mrs. Geo. E. Metcalfe of Fountain, Colo., has been missing in action since July 14 in Sicily, according to a message received by his parents from the adjutant general's office of the war department. Cpl. Metcalfe's mother is the former Fannie Mounsey. He was her only son.

The young soldier was born in Medicine Lodge, leaving here when he was about six years old. However, he has visited here regularly since that time and has many relatives and friends in this community. The last time relatives here heard from him was about two months ago when he was in North Africa.

Cpl. Metcalfe entered the service in March 1942, and after receiving his basic training at Camp Roberts, Calif., was sent to Fort Benning, Ga., and later to Fort Bragg, N. C. He was a member of the parachute troops. He went overseas May 9, this year.

Cpl. Metcalfe was born June 4, 1914. Before entering the service, he was employed as a brakeman by the Santa Fe railroad and worked out of Pueblo.
