Lt. Robert R. Smith, Medicine Lodge, who has been stationed in New Guinea, was recently awarded the Bronze Star for heroism there, according to word received by his wife, Mrs. Ruth Ellen Smith.

Lt. Smith is now in a rear area hospital recuperating from an attack of fever which he contracted while on a recent mission.

Following is the citation which accompanied the Bronze Star Lt. Smith received.

2nd Lt. Robert R. Smith, 0-130-4134, Infantry, U. S. A., for heroic achievements in connection with military operations against the enemy on Aug. 8, 1944. He led an intelligence and reconnaissance patrol into enemy occupied territory for the purpose of capturing prisoners and reporting enemy activity. When enemy opposition was encountered, he aggressively led the patrol forward and captured or killed the entire force. Because of his bravery and outstanding leadership, several prisoners were captured and valuable information obtained.
