JOHN VINCENT ASHFORD
JOHN VINCENT ASHFORD, 90, of 902 Marion Ave., and father of George and
Luther Ashford, Fort Scott, died at 8:50 a.m. today in Mercy Hospital. The
funeral service will be at 2 p.m. Monday in Earl's Memorial Home, with
interment in Evergreen cemetery.
Mr. Ashford was a retired farmer. He lived a number of years in the
Redfield community coming to Fort Scott 35 years ago. He was born Nov. 17,
1871 in Saline County, Mo. to W. H. and Fannie Lemmons Ashford. His
marriage to Mary Cole was in November 1899, at Saline County. She died in
1950
Other surviving children are John L. of the state of Oregon; P. J.,
Joplin; and Mrs. Sterling (Ruth) Keck, Houston, Tex. There are nine
grandchildren. Mr. Ashford was the last of his family.
Note: This obituary says he was born in 1871, his tombstone says 1873 and
the 1900 census record says 1872. Unsure which is his correct birth year.

MARY A. ASHFORD
MRS. MARY A. ASHFORD, 69, wife of John V. Ashford, a resident of Fort
Scott for 25 years and of the county for 50 years, died at 5 a.m. yesterday
at the residence, 902 Marion, which had been her home since 1925. Mrs.
Ashford, mother of George and Luther Ashford of this city, had been in
failing health for one and one-half years, and seriously ill for the past
six months.
Mary Adeline Cole, daughter of P. J. and Lucy Cole, an only child, was
born Feb. 11, 1881, at Clinton, Mo., and grew to young womanhood there. She
was married at Clinton on Nov. 11, 1899, to John Vincent Ashford, who
survives.
In 1910 the Ashfords came to Bourbon county, settling first on a farm south
of Redfield, where they lived until 1921, when they moved to the Bahney farm
just west of the city. In 1925 the family retired from farming and came to
Fort Scott, moving to the residence at 902 Marion Avenue.
She was a lifelong and active member of the Methodist Church and a
member of the Royal Neighbors.
Surviving, besides the husband are one daughter, Mrs. Ruth Keck, Dumas,
Tex.; four sons, John L. Ashford, Burnes, Ore., Jay Ashford, Joplin, George
and Luther M. Ashford, Fort Scott; nine grandchildren and one
great-grandchild.
Funeral services will be held at 2:30 p.m. tomorrow at the Konantz
chapel, conducted by the Rev. John J. Clinton, pastor of the First Methodist
church. Interment will be in Evergreen cemetery.
The body will lie in state at the Konantz chapel until the hour of the
services.
Note: This obituary contains an error listing Lucy as her mother. The
mother of Mary Adeline Cole was Josephine (Reader) Cole. Also the 1880
census record shows Mary's correct birth year was in 1879.

MARY ASHFORD RITES----Funeral services for Mrs. Mary Ashford of this city,
who died here Saturday, were held yesterday afternoon at 2:30 p.m. in the
Konantz mortuary with the Rev. J. J. Clinton of the First Methodist church
officiating. Interment was made in Evergreen cemetery.
Pallbearers were Jim Tucker, Travis Wyatt, John Haller, Lester Wright, Lee
Tucker, and Sam Blackwell.
Music was furnished by Lloyd Wright, soloist, with Mrs. Frank Decker as
accompanist.
Groups from the Royal Neighbors lodge and from Walnut Hill attended in
bodies and many were present from Redfield.
Out-of-town relatives attending were Mr. and Mrs. Sterling Keck and
daughter, Delora of Dumas, Texas; Mr. and Mrs. Jay Ashford and Mr. and Mrs.
Richard Gandy and daughter of Joplin, Mo.

LUTHER M. ASHFORD
LUTHER M. ASHFORD, 70, 1523 Mulberry St., died Thursday evening at his
home after a long illness. he was born Feb. 12, 1910, in Bourbon County,
the son of John V. and Mary A. Cole Ashford. He married Mildred E. White,
May 19, 1931 at Nevada, Mo. He was a retired Frisco Railroad employee. He
was a sports enthusist and as a young man he spent several years in boxing.
Mr. Ashford was noted for his quality gardening.
Survivors include his wife of the home; one daughter: Mrs. Fred (Ellen)
Geneva, 706 S. Margrave St.; one brother: George W. Ashford, 310 Arthur St.;
one sister: Mrs. T. S. (Ruth) Keck, Pasadena, Texas; three grandchildren;
and three great-grandchildren.
Services will be 3 p.m. Monday at Cheney's Memorial Chapel with the
Rev. Cornelius Mears and the Rev. Joe White officiating. Burial will be in
Evergreen Cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, in
care of Helen E. Bohon, 1423 S. Judson St., Fort Scott 66701.

RETIRED BUSINESSMAN, POLICE OFFICER DIES
A retired Fort Scott businessman who had become a Fort Scott fixture
through his work as a reserve police officer died Monday at Mercy Hospital.
George W. Ashford, 74, 310 Arthur St., had served with the reserve unit
for more than 20 years, holding captain's rank in the unit at the time of
his death, and had become a familiar figure through his service as a
security officer at local sporting events, as a traffic control officer in
the vicinity of the junior high school and as a "second officer" on the
Police Department's night patrol and as escort for funeral processions.
Mr. Ashford's work at the junior high school was through 7-234 as a
pedestrian and traffic safety officer, a position he had held since his
retirement in 1974 from business here. For 37 years he operated Ashford's
Service Station at First Street and national Avenue. He took over the
operation in 1937 and bought the business in 1941.
A lifetime resident of this area, Mr. Ashford was born Feb. 11, 1908,
at Redfield, the son of John Vincent and Mary Adaline Cole Ashford. He
married Gladys M. Tucker Dec. 28, 1933, at Nevada, Mo. She died May 8,
1969.
Survivors include three daughters Glenda Haller of Nevada; Donna Webber
of Joplin, Mo., and Maxine Arnold of Lake Fort Scott; one son, Joe Ashford
of Wichita; one sister, Ruth Keck of Pasadena, Texas; six grandchildren and
two great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday in Earl's Memorial Home with
Pastor Smith Rose officiating. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society or the
American Heart Association.

BETTY MAXINE ARNOLD
BETTY MAXINE ARNOLD---Betty Maxine Arnold, 68, Fort Scott, died early
Tuesday, July 14, 1998, at Medicalodge following a lengthy illness. She was
born April 26, 1930, in Fort Scott the daughter of George and Mary
Stufflebeam Ashford. She married Kelley Arnold on Sept. 9, 1951 in Fort
Scott. She was a member of the Brethren Church, the Topaz #325 Chapter,
Order of Eastern Star, Garland. Prior to her illness she worked as cook for
the restaurant in Ben Franklin store.
Survivors include her husband, Kelley of the home; one daughter, Susan
Smith, Norman, Okla.; two half-sisters, Glenda Haller, Nevada, Mo.; and
Donna Webber, Webb City, Mo. Also surviving are two grandchildren, Natasha
and Nacole smith, four nieces and three nephews. She was preceded in death
by per parents; a son, Stephen Lewis Arnold; and a brother, Joe Ashford.
The Rev. Kevin Moyers will conduct funeral services at 10:30 a.m. Thursday
in the Brethren Church, 1421 Margrave. Burial will be in the Evergreen
Cemetery, under the direction of the Cheney Witt memorial Chapel. Memorials
are suggested to the Brethren Church, and may be sent to the Cheney Witt

BETTY MAXINE ARNOLD
The Rev. Kevin Moyers conducted funeral services for Betty Maxine Arnold,
Thursday morning in the Brethren Church. Music was provided by Marilyn
Minor, Pianist, and Dusty Drake, Vocalist. Group attendance was represented
by members of the Fort Scott Scottish Rite Consistory.
Pallbearers were Rex McElmurry, Bobby Button, Bill Hamilton, Albert
Johnston, Gary Stufflebeam and Harry Spencer. Burial was in the Evergreen
Cemetery under the direction of the Cheney Witt Memorial Chapel.
